Super Star Soldier
« on: March 29, 2011, 10:14:35 PM »
I was playing SSS yesterday, and I just can't get past the first part of the second stage.  I have 2 problems:

1:  I'm standing about 2ft away from a 50" plasma TV, and I actually have to turn my head to see different parts of the screen
2:  I favour the green laser weapon, which although immediately very powerful, seems to suffer from the drawback that 1 hit massively decreases its range, and then it takes ages to build back up.

My scheme is to go through the first level, picking up the green weapon ASAP, setting my shield to front/back, parking the back of it at the bottom of the mid bass, effectively hitting him 4 times a rotation, then, if I still have the shield for the last boss, park the shield on his weakspot and get all up in his face.

Then when I get to the second level, as soon as I take 1 hit, it becomes impossible.  Tips?  I want to try setting my shield on autofire spin next time, but am I missing something?  Like maybe if I max out the red powerup?

When you reach the second area try to stay in center to help give you time to get out of the way of shots and try to avoid sticking to the bottom of the screen so you don't suddenly get ambushed by the stealth bombers. Also try to bump up the speed a bit too.

I was actually at the bottom, since the sideways firepower of the green shot is poor.  was trying to destroy the turrets.

yeah playing PCE on a new flat screen isn't doing you any favors. You are missing out on a lot in graphics and lag. Try it out on your GT, thats how I play Final Soldier and I got a high score woot http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=3832.15.
I think smaller screens are better for shmups anyways cause you get a better perspective of what you have to deal with.

It's a plasma, so it shouldn't have any lag per se, but I remember I used to love it on emulation, and the PSP version.   By the time I'm 6ft away with my feet up, it shouldn't be too much bigger than the GT, so hopefully that will make a difference.  I was finding Shinobi difficult too.

Just because it's plasma doesn't mean there's no lag. Do you have a 'game mode' on the TV? The lag comes from frame grabbing the incoming signal, processing FX and filters on it, then outputting to the native display circuit. Audio is delayed/buffered to keep it in sync. What the means, is that you now have additional time between controller input and reaction seen on screen. Could be a single frame, could be several frames. All depends on the TV and the 'mode' (if it has such modes, newer TVs do specifically for this - though they might not apply to composite or RF input. Might only apply to HDMI input). Using an RGB-to-hdmi converter will also add at least 1 frame lag, on top of whatever your TV is doing (assuming you might use such a device). Lag is the reason why games like Guitar Hero have calibration setup for the controller response.

Some people can easily adjust for this or may even never notice it and then on the opposite end you have people that are sensitive to this. But sounds like to me that you're way too close to the TV ;) Do you have the TV set in the bathroom or something??? Playing games while you're on the porcelain throne?

Ah, I see what you mean, I thought you meant response time lag. I do have a game mode.  I don't think it's a problem, but I'll check it.

I think being too close is the main culprit for now, I could try it on the 32" and see how I do. (but that is an LCD)

Fly your little ship all over the place, when something gets in your way, turn.

Flat screens suck for retro games. Start hoarding CRTs like me, I have 5 of them in my game room, not counting the monitor in the MAME cab.

You can get a Wega now for a pittance: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-KV-27FS120-27-Inch-Trinitron-Screen/dp/B00006HMD8 But don't buy one of these unless you have at least 2 strong friends as it is heavier than white dwarf star matter... no lie.
