can you swap the white and black housing on the cd units?
« on: May 26, 2012, 10:40:43 AM »
Has anyone ever switched over the housing colors from the different Japan and US models? Im wondering if its possible and will everything fit and screw together without any mods to the internals or housing?

I've heard it's possible, but I don't really know myself.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

don't they use different connections on the back, and thus the openings are different sizes?

I dont have a black cd unit to compare at the moment but I have a TG16 & cd dock (minus the cd unit), and I was thinking of getting a working white cd unit (since they seem more available) and putting the black housing on it from a broken drive so it's all black and original looking.
If the only difference is the power plug/interface plug in the back, that doesnt seem like a big deal.
Anyone else know for sure?

Both cases are completely interchangeable. I have swapped a few before. If you were to swap over everything from a white drive to a black case you can easily change all the parts to black except for the rear IO port. Unless you want to desolder the black one a move it over that is(lots of work).  All plugs and ports are the same besides color otherwise.

Excellent, thats good to know! I'll give this a try in the next few weeks when I get all the parts together.
