However, I'm not a PC Engine guy.  I barely have a handle on TG-16 prices, but this lot looks like a great deal to me.  Could I get your thoughts on this?  I don't have a PC Engine so this would be a great way to get into all the Japanese games I missed out on as a kid.

[EDIT] Looking at it again, there are a lot of sports games.  If I take my TG-16 knowledge and apply it to this sale then those games are not worth much except for SF3.

None of those games are worth more than $10. Avenue Pad 6's are something like $25 each, a plain jane PC Engine is cheap. It might be worth it if you don't have any of that stuff (no Duo Tap yet, etc) considering how much it would normally cost you to ship it all to Canada, but it's certainly not a steal. I'd pass.

-11 games; 5 of which are non-sports games for the last of the $20-50. They are all $5-10 games if you buy them individually (Street Fighter II' as well). Actually, R-Type pt.1 and Youkai are worth a bit more than SFII' usually.

Get them at Hard-Off, Surugaya, Geo on clearance or some other recycle shops/inaka game shops OUTSIDE of Tokyo/Osaka/etc. when in Japan (but not in one shot; this would be multiple trips over time to find everything); you're laughing because you just paid $10-20 for the PCE, $10 per controller, $5 or less for the multitap and $1-5 for each loose game. That's $50-75 total. Ship to North America via EMS... and your at like $100-150. By everything in Akihabara during a one week trip to Japan, and this could end up being MORE expensive than the $160 if you include EMS shipping.

If you live in Japan long term and have all the time in the world, you would get this all for cheaper of course.


A steal? Nope.
A rip-off? Nope.
Market Value outside of Japan? It's a bit under. Good luck finding cheaper. You won't unless it's on these forums and someone is giving a deal to the members here.

I know you're limiting these quotes to ebay, which puts everything on the high end, but I'm going to split hairs here and take issue with these prices.

*$30 is the rip-off asking price for a used Avenue 6 pad; Gamedoctorhk has them sitting around for that and new ones for $40. Realistically, used Ave6 pads run $25 in a standard auction to as low as $15 in a sleeper auction or from a forum member.

In both your examples of cheaper PC Engine consoles ($15-25 is cheaper than even any shop in Japan. Even Hard-Off is around those prices) and Ave6 pads, they are through either this forum or similar forums. That's the point. Unless you are a regular on something like this site, how can you find cheaper without lucking out or living in Japan?

That link showed multitaps sitting, unsold, for $6 on ebay last week.

More than one loose, white PC Engine auctioned for $15 on ebay two or three months ago. I know because I almost bought one.

An Ave 6 pad with a CIB SF2 sold on ebay for a whopping $22 a few days ago. $15 for a used pad in a sleeper auction isn't unusual. With the shortened history available for completed searches, I'm afraid I can't give you anymore proof than that, so you'll have to take my word for it. $30 really is the most sellers are able to gouge on a used one. Three Ave 6 pads are currently available for $30/BO and we all know Hit-Japan will come down quite a bit. I'm sure someone could get these for $24. And like I said, if that's not good enough, anyone with the special hookup known as "Google" can find them at gamedoctorhk any day of the week and get ripped off on a used one for $30 or a new one $40.

Yep.  I recently picked one up from Hit-Japan and he accepted my offer of $24.  I buy stuff from him because he regularly takes far less than his BIN reads.

Between him and these forums, my library has grown considerably lately.  It's not hard to find deals if you are a little patient and are willing to look around some.  Even Amazon has a decent selection of Turbo stuff, sometimes for pretty good prices, though I haven't checked recently.

You clearly didn't bother to account for shipping from Japan. A similar PC Engine lot shipped from Japan with EMS would be what... $60 or more for shipping cost (assuming it is no more than 2.5Kg)? $40 if you want to use sea shipping (uninsured and takes a couple months, give or take). I'm being generous here, by the way. There really is no way it would be that light with packing. The REAL weight is going to hit about 4Kg, FYI.

Let's say the PCE is $25 (which is lower than most any place; not considering the $15 ones that SamuraiGhost sold at a loss). The Ave 6 pads are $25 each (I rounded up from $25 to make the math easy). The multitap is $5. The game lot is $20. That's $100. Add in the $60 (probably more) for shipping from Japan. Guess what price we are at? Not a bad price at all when everything is considered. In fact, I am not saying that this lot is a good deal that is noticeably cheaper than average for a local buyer.

Correct. I'm no longer talking about the lot, whether it's a good deal, or the logistics of shipping - I wanted to set the record straight on your estimates.

There are some very good reasons why shipping should never be included in appraisals:
1) It's obvious. Everyone knows we're not shopping in a mall.
2) The cost is different for everybody. Some of us live in Canada, some in Japan, and some buy in bulk for combined rates.
3) There's a precedent. Real prices for baseball cards or anything else don't include externalizes like shipping and sales tax.
4) Gougers read this shit too and everyone tends to focus on the $dollar$ amounts and ignore the context.
