Bridging Point for TurboDuo Capacitor
« on: January 22, 2013, 01:19:47 PM »
Long time since I've posted here.  I have a dead TurboDuo that I put off repairing for a while because it was getting too frustrating! After a long break and a cooler head, it looks like a few bad traces and push-through-pads (I think they're called vias?) are likely the cause, so bridging them with some wire should hopefully do the trick.

There is one, however, where I don't see an obvious bridging point: The positive leg of the 470uf cap by the power supply.  On the top of the board, there's a trace that runs to a point next to the power switch but on the bottom, I have no idea.  It comes out and looks like it could be linked somehow to the two legs of the power switch.  Is it one or the other? Both? Neither?  :-k

Thanks for the help!

The positive lead goes to the one of the sides of the resister labeled 750 on the bottom of the board. You can trace it from the top side of the board but is much easier to repair from underneath. I just had to repair one like that myself. That Capacitor almost always pulls one or both of its solder points out when trying to change it.

Here is a pic of my repair for the positive lead. I like to also bend the positive pole of the cap against the board before soldering so the cap isn't so loose.

Don't know if I would have thought of that! Thank you very much!

One other one you might be able to help me with: the 330uf cap that faces north/south above the voltage regulators (positive leg north, negative south).  This time, it's the negative leg.  From the top, maybe one of the pads on the 47uf surface mount cap next to it? From the bottom, maybe the negative leg of the 220uf cap next to it?

For that the easiest thing to do would be to scrape off some of the green top layer of ground trace remaining and then solder straight to it. I just use a small flat head to scrape it off. So if the solder point pulled out then scrape the green area that was connected to it and solder.

I don't believe that cap has any connection of any sort on the bottom of the motherboard. Correct me if I am thinking of the other 330UF cap in that area.
