PCE@arcade
« on: January 23, 2013, 12:45:50 AM »
Hi all,

i just realized (somehow i haven't been aware of this until now) that there have been a number of arcade games utilizing Hudsons HuC6280.
Ref.: http://www.mamedb.com/list.php?category=&cpu=HuC6280&fuzzy_name=&manufacturer=&start_year=1985
According to this list, Hudson and DECO were the major publishing companies for it.

I wonder if anyone here has some more information about it. I'd love to know in how far the hardware driving these games is based upon PC Engine. As the list includes some ported PCE bootlegs it seems to be at least related to it. Would be great to have some more (and partly unknown) games with that unique PCE style.

I think malduci (tom, bonknuts) even made a version of the arcade bloody wolf, running on the pce.

Wow, neat find.  Data East loved the Bee CPU, but too bad they didn't port more of those to the PCE.

Especially Captain America and the Avengers.  I've heard some ports are terrible, but maybe the arcade version ain't too bad

Midnight Resistance - I love that game.  And it should be totally do-able too...

I spent a lot of quarters on SlySpy and Midnight Resistance in the arcades.

I think the HuC6280 was used as a sound chip for most of these other than Bloody Wolf though.  I found this:
http://www.system16.com/museum.php?id=14

This shows Data East's different hardware configurations.

This shows 68000 CPU and HuC6280 (clocked slower like in the MAME list posted above) for sound:

Configuration 4: (Sly Spy, Midnight Resistence, Etc..)
http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=943
Main Processor: MC68000 (16-bit, 12 MHz)
Sound: HuC6280 (8-bit, 3 MHz); YM2203 (1.5 MHz); YM3812 (3 MHz); OKI6295 (7.757 kHz)
Video Resolution: 256x240

But.. these might be PCE based...
Configuration 1: (Bloody Wolf)
http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=940
Main Processor: HuC6280 (8-bit, 7.159066 MHz)
Sound: HuC6280 (7.159066 MHz); YM2203 (1.5 MHz); MSM5205 (384 kHz)

And this one???
Configuration 2:
http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=942
Main Processor: HuC6280 (8-bit, 7.159066 MHz)
Sound: M6502 (1.5 MHz); YM2203 (1.5 MHz); YM3812 (3 MHz); OKI6295 (7.759 kHz)
Video Resolution: 256x240

I want to say I recall Tom saying there were atleast 3 games that used it for the gfx etc.  Bloody Wolf being one of them, & I recall playing another via MAME, some kind of game involving cowboys & indians...I think. :-k
