Cosmic Fantasy 2 and newbie here
« on: March 09, 2006, 01:01:17 PM »
Hello- I'm newbie here though I played the Tg-16 for over a decade and got a bunch of games with a DUO (for a hefty price though). It's been a while since I played Cosmic Fantasy 2.  Call me weird, but has anyone who played through  Cosmic Fantasy 2  felt kind of sad or depressed after finding what happens to the girl at the end (I won't spoil the ending)?  I also have CF3 in Japanese...It would be nice if somebody could translate it (just the text at least).

The ending is definately weird and imo is something of a cliffhanger...I don't think the story ends properly, it leaves too many things out. But all in all, a very well-done translation and story. :)

No, I don't think that's weird. I didn't think it was the most upbeat ending either... which is one of the reasons why the overall experience was so memorable, for me anyway. IMO, folks today are somewhat jaded by the high production values of contemporary games and don't always appreciate how neat CF2's story was, especially back in the early 90's.

Cosmic Fantasy 2 had an amazing story, it had my favorite story out of any RPG, right along with Ys I and Ys II. The ending was absolutely stunning and I totally didn't expect it (though you think you would from starting the game) and it was such a great experience. One of the most touching feelings in RPG history.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Can someone refresh my memory on the ending? I never liked CF2 very much, and I honestly can't remember a thing from the story except the time travel bit. I assume the ending had something to do with Van's girl (Laura?). Crap, I really am going senile.

I'm with you!    I've been forgetting things lately as well.

Anyway, I never bothered to play Cosmic Fantasy II because of the supposedly high encounter-rate. But it is starting to sound interesting. I think I'll give this one a shot right after Xak III. I am assuming the American release is expensive as hell though...  :?

I've seen CF2 sell for $20.

The American version is usually around $30-40, not too bad. The random battle encounter rate is on the high side and it makes the game difficult because of it, so you really have to hang through with it. For me, it was all worth it :) .

I didn't like the whiny girlfriend in the WD version and was glad that she died.

The only depressing part for me was having to wait for Cosmic Fantasy 3(WD even teased us within the game), because the ending setup what looked to be an awesome game.

Although I would've been dissaponted at first with Cosmic 3, since you start out alone in a poor town again and its with a new character.

Kabuki Den has a truly tragic scene in it that's scarred me for life.

I also thought that it was more sad(than CF2) in Vay when that kid gets felled by an arrow as your reward for completing a dungeon.

That would be Pottle, who was killed by Emperor Jeal's crossbow while escaping the collapsing Sea Shrine. It was particularly moving because Pottle and P.J. were actually starting to become friends and it shook her more than anything. I know a woman who was playing the game who literally burst out in tears at that part...it was that effective at controlling the player's emotions.
