Help needed with TurboExpress capacitor replacement.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and was recently inspired to resurrect my poor TurboExpress with the help of one of the great guides on this site.  Unfortunately, due to inexperience and leaking capacitors I have lifted/damaged a trace and pad for CC505.  I'm also concerned about CC704 due to what looks like corrosion that has eaten away most of the pad on the board.  If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. 

I've also read about tantalum capacitors on a few posts in the forum and would like to know if anyone has specific part numbers for a complete replacement on my Express.  I don't want to go through all the trouble of installing caps that are just going to fail again like the originals.

Not possible. A friend of mine sent his Pce GT to thesteve with a small chunk of the board missing and he still got it working. It can be saved

Just use an extacto knife to scrape of some coating and the trace will be expose where you can solder to.

Yeah, thesteve is amazing. He's my go to guy if I can't fix my systems.

Yeah just take a razor blade and scrap away some of the coating until you see copper to solder to.  What you may have to do is take the cap leg and fold it into a big V shape so you can solder it to both sides of where that pad was.

Thanks BlueBMW for the detailed information you provided on the photo.  I'll have to use a leaded capacitor for CC505, but do you know anything about the tantalum capacitors that have been mentioned in other threads?  From what little I've read they're smaller and more reliable.  I'm hoping to get a list of part numbers so that I can order everything I need to finally get this Express up and running again.

You could still use a ceramic / tantalum capacitor for that one... you'll just have to solder a piece of wire or something as a bridge between those two trace points and then solder the cap to it.  As long as all of it is connected, it doesnt really matter how you do it.  A leaded cap will be easier to manipulate for that sort of situation, but a solid cap would work too.

thesteve can chime in with more info on ceramic / tantalum caps.  STEVE?!?!

Thanks again for the input.  Hopefully thesteve will see my post and chime in with some sage advice on alternative capacitors.  Until then I'll be making yet another futile attempt at defeating the final boss in The Legendary Axe.
