I'd like some info on a 3rd party controller.

I don't have pictures to show, but I will do my best to describe it.

It came with a PC Engine Duo I purchased from the forums. It's the same grey and blue design of most PC Engine Duo controllers, with a few differences. Firstly it says PC Turbo in the top left corner instead of whatever it typically says up there (I'll assume NEC or PC Engine), the d-pad is much more traditional as in it lacks the circle style and in fact looks almost (but not exactly) like a repainted Dreamcast d-pad, and lastly the middle part which usually has a logo is just entirely blank like many of those cheap replica controllers you can buy online for many consoles.

It seemed to work fine at first, but then I played games that required diagonals. For the longest time I thought I had a 1st party controller and was blaming Fantasy Zone's controls on a shoddy port... until I saw Game Sack's review of the game on the TurboGrafx-16 and they didn't bring up the controls once.

So my question is... does anyone own or know anything about this controller? If so what's the quality of the d-pad like in comparison to a 1st party controller? I haven't actually used one, so I'm not sure if the issues I'm having with diagonals are the same across the board with original controllers as well. Thanks.

No clue what controller you are talking about.  Take a picture of it and post it and you'll probably get a detailed response.  A lot of the veteran members here have probably seen one like it

It sounds like one of those Chinese knock off system controllers.

It definitely sounds like your controller is not delivering the performance it should. I have used some controllers for 20+ years without any problems.

This is an older resource, but I love it:

If you were to investigate the cheap PCE clones (I can't find useful links: PCE Shuttle ClonesPirate HuCARD (bonus fun)  ), you may find something to corroborate Bernie's suggestion.

I have a few third-party PCE controllers (PCE BLASTER 3-button, for example) and they have never given me any problems (although their build quality seems cheaper than first-party...)

It's definitely from one of the clones (clicky for a CGI clone) - post a pic and maybe someone can say exactly which one.

In the mean time, you need to get yourself a real controller.
