White CD Rom Unit, can it be fixed..
« on: June 30, 2006, 11:43:59 PM »
I have a white original CD rom unit, that was working. Now it has stopped..

It gets power OK, track indicator comes on and stays as '0' repeat light works ok...

I guess the motor has gone as no CDs spin.

Is it possible to get it fixed somewhere ?

Check and make sure that the laser hasn't moved all the way to the right. This happens sometimes. The laser is moved too far to ever come back.

To fix it, just open the machine and manually wind it back.

This happened to my US Duo, and I guess it could happen to the stand-alone CD unit as well. I don't know. Supossedly it happens mostly when playing CD-Rs, but I'm not sure about that.

Before opening it up, please take into consideration that PCE CDROM2 systems are VERY risky to open up and mess with since they are so small and compact, full of wires and junk. I've opened mine up a little bit before and had to stop before things got nasty. If you decide to open it up, be very, very careful!

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

I experienced the same just some months ago. The CD doesn't spin and 'PC' ist displayed. This happened suddenly after some months not using my PC-Engine. I tried a second original never used CDROM2, same effect. Then I tried a different power adapter and it worked again, also the first CDROM2. But suddenly after 2 days it stopped working again. Since that day I've never tried it again.
So it would recommend you to try a different power adaptor and see if it's working again. Also try to clean the contacts on the IFU30's side, as Tatsujin suggests in this thread.

Im sure the power is OK but maybe the connection is iffy, i'll check and also clean the connection. I also had not used the PC Engine for a few months hell a couple of years, so maybe it is just dirty even though is was stored well..

I try it again tonight

once again ;) !! usually dirty connectors on the IFU-30 side may cause the problem up to 99.9%!? just clean them up both of them and it will work perfectly! i have the same probs every 2 month, so i just use some WD-40 contact-spray on the PCE/CD sides connector and push/pull the two devices in and out for about ten times > mostly solved!

Whoa!  Are you telling me that someone took the cd-drive out of its white case and shoved it into that crazy new "case". And it works? INSANE :)
