Possible solution to your Duo-R loosing it's audio music.

Last night I just found something out that may help some of you guys that are having this issue. Iv'e had this Duo-R going on 2 years now and since I received it I have been having issues with it loosing the music on my CD games randomly. I replaced the laser at first hoping it would solve my problem and it didn't even after fine tuning pots 102 and 105. I even sent it out to one of the techs here, It was sent back to me with the understanding that it was fixed now and to my surprise it continued with the same problem. I was at my wits end and decided to contact a friend of mine in Japan to ask him for some suggestions on what to try out next. He mentioned to me that adding some fresh new white lithium grease to the Laser assembly gears and rails may help. I told him that's the first thing i do to all of my CD based consoles. So he suggested add a bit more to the rails as some times they catch minor hangups for a split second and will loose the games music. So I tried just that and it made it far worst. I took the laser assembly completely apart, slid the rails through the Lasers guide holes and noticed really bad sticky drag while doing that. I cleaned off the rails completely reassembled everything tested it out and just like that problem solved. Iv'e been playing all of my CD games with absolutely no problems no whatsoever !! Very strange as my 2 other Duo's were the complete opposite where if they don't have enough white lithium grease they will have issues reading disc properly. So this is one more thing you guy's can add to your list of trial and error problem solving if you are encountering this issue with your Duo's.

If the motor is having issues pushing the lenses while grease is on the rail then the motor is going bad and should be replaced. I wouldn't run the thing without any grease at all. You will end up with metal grinding metal. It may take awhile, but over time it will wear down from friction.

Only times mine has that problem is when it gets nudged a little but it doesn't take much, sometimes a tug from the controller will knock out the cd music. Is yours the same still if it gets a little bump or has that also improved?

 I'll be sure to very lightly coat the lasers guide rails with some lithium grease. Gonna try a different brand.  Do you know by chance how I would go about finding a replacement motor ?? Thanks for the info

I don't have a Duo-R around to look, but I am sure someone here can tell you what motor you can use. Try BlueBMW or one of the other techies here.

I typically use the same motor as what is inside a stand alone Tg16 CD drive. They are a slightly different size but the mounting holes line up and voltages are similar http://www.ebay.com/itm/231157654784?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649


Really any DC motor with the correct mounting holes and a voltage range of around 3v-9v will work just fine. I think 7V is what it runs at but I can't remember since I haven't checked for a while.

the motor runs @ 0-9v depending on demand

Same here regarding the slightest system bump and audio loss. 

I still have my issues with audio dialog loss on a particular game during cut-scenes....."Macross 2036".  Regreasing the rails didn't work for me.  The game music plays fine, only dialog audio loss??  I just live with it for now.  Maybe I'll try the approach to completely clean the rails off.

Sometimes this can happen on a regular DUO if the wires are routed too tightly as well. I just worked on a system that was acting as if the rails were dirty only to find out that the cable for the CD lens was pulled too tight not letting the lens move freely. I simply let some slack out of the zip tie and problem is now solved.
