Maybe it's because it's Ys and I thus judge it too mildly, but the scrolling has never bothered me.

Ys III PCE is a good example of why choppy scrolling actually can be fine. Look at how many SNES and Genesis fans still say the PCE version is the best, even with the choppy scrolling and version 1 artwork. No one complains about the choppy parallax in Ys II either.

Even if Ys III on the SNES was the best looking game ever made, the music would still drag it down to the bottom.

I know nothing about programming on TG16, but with what little programming I have done it would be a very simple change. I was just watching the SNES version and it made me cry how nice the BG scrolling looked.

Although the endless number of PCE games with various types of parallax (like Falcom's LoX) prove that it could be done in an original version, I really don't think there's anything close to a simple change that can be done to PCE Ys III's port of the tile-shuffling MSX version that would fix it.

From Felghana and on, the Ys III remake, his name has been localized to Galbalan (the cruel marauder from far off lands).

Ah, so that's why. I prefer Galbalan over demonicus
Demonicus sounds like a cheezy evil name

..the music in this game is pure delight.

Oh yeah! I've gone back'n'forth on which soundtrack is at the top of the list of the Ys series on this system, and Ys III had the spot for a time. What happens is, you over listen to one soundtrack, get a little sick of it, then listen to the other and then that becomes your favorite of the series, etc. Rinse and repeat. Like right now, Ys IV seems to be a bit enduring to me, but that's maybe because I over listened to the prior ones, etc.

This is the truth. Over-listening to something totally complicates objective judgements.

I have always held to the "Ys I&II" is superior to all argument, but Ys III is amazing.
