anyone here know crap about speakers?
« on: July 20, 2014, 05:57:03 AM »
Recently i came into possession of a Blast City :)
thing is, the speakers are blown to hell and back.
does anyone here know what i would need in order to find replacements?
I've found the datasheet on the original drivers here:

Consider looking at car speakers. That particular one in the documentation actually looks similar, in that it appears to have a tweeter or something mounted inside the regular cone.

Then again, maybe not. The picture is at such an angle I had to get a better look. Still, if you can find a car speaker that fits similar dimensions, might be worth a try.

I feel your pain on those Blast speakers (same part on the Megalo 510). I think NOS goes for $75-150 each, if you can find them. On ebay you can sometime find folks that part out other Sega cabs, namely drivers, that use the same if not damn near close speaker+housing.

I can't recall if these guys have replacement speakers that fit, but I've had luck with them for other speakers on my Versus:

I've heard tales of folks repairing the cone surrounds. There are DIY kits for car stereos but I've never went that route.

I used some car speakers in my old woody cab.  They worked just fine.  Just see what the impedence is on the old speakers and try and match it

yeah, my understanding is that i need to match the impedance, but if the new speakers have a higher wattage, that's not going to change anything.
is that correct?

See if you have room to fit a larger speaker in there.  1.7" X 4" is very difficult to work with.  Car speakers wont work in that size becuase at 1.7" you looking at tweeters only.  Automotive doesnt use a full range that tiny.

Find a speaker you can fit and if you must go with that size, use a 1.5" circular full range and wire 2 speakers per side.  you can get 8ohm speakers and make a 1.7" X 4" adapter plate to mount them to.  Wire each pair in parallel which will bring the 8ohms down to 4ohms to math the stability threshold of the speaker channel output.  By using 2 speakers you couble your surface area and that will also increase sound pressure level +3db with the same power level.

These will work for that situation.

You want 4 speakers.

I dont focus so much on the sensitivity because in my experience with speakers (Auto Sound competition), the sensitivity rule of thumb were not "like for like" with all speakers.  At the end of the day that concept that more power is required for lower sensitivity didnt always work.  That could be attributed so many factors such as manufacturer accuracy of spec sheets as well as application variations.

At 8.00 a pair of speakers, what do you have to lose.
