Turbo Express screen issue
« on: June 20, 2006, 10:30:17 AM »
I just got a new Turbo Express from MindRec (they ship damn fast, btw) and I've been playing it for a few minutes.  It's great, but I'm having a little screen issue, and I wasn't sure if there was something actually wrong with my screen, or if it's the nature of the 16-year old LCD technology.

Keep in mind that the unit is new, needs the sound fix, but that shouldn't have any effect on the screen.

Basically, the screen is showing some burn-in, especially in dark areas. It's not permanent and will fade/go away after a little while. The best example is in R-Type, after you start the game the first part of the first stage is almost entirely black in the background, and you can still see the big R-TYPE logo in the background, like an old monitor that has suffered from Burn-in.  I poped in Alien Crush, and it does the same thing although to a lesser degree. IT's really only noticable on that game when the screen fades and you still see the score in the upper left hand corner, even if though it's supposed to be totally black.  Also, even though I'm playing Alien Crush, I can still see R-TYPE if I just played that game. On a positive note, the screen doesnt' have any dead pixels that I can see so far.

If you turn the brightness all the way down or up, you can't see it, only if it's set for the middle, the sweet spot in contrast that you actually want to play in.

So, do I have a bum unit, or are they all like that?

*edit* Here's a picture of it, I had reset the TE unit and took the picture, you can still see the R-TYPE logo, as well as the R-9 and some badguys from when I had the unit paused trying to take a picture. Sorry for the fuzziness, I couldn't get the camera to focus any better.

I cant see your picture (probably cant hotlink from that forum), but from what i hear its normal. Its not actually burn in, its just the LCD being sluggish until it "warms up". Mine does it too, but it goes away in a few minutes. Just the nature of the screens of the time. Ive read that after enough use, it will get a little better. But its not going to go away alltogether.

The fading effect is competely normal. It's nothing to be worried about.

Okay, just wanted to check. I've been playing it all night and it really doesn't bother me at all, it's still 100x better than the screens on all my handhelds except for the DS.

On an unrelated note, this thing lasts a very long time with a set of 2500 mah NiMH batteries.  I used the batteries to play completely through Sonic 3 on my Nomad last night, and I played the TurboExpress for a good two hours straight, and they weren't showing any signs of letting up.

Same.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).
