A greeting and an RX problem.
« on: July 29, 2006, 06:45:53 AM »
Hello! As you can tell, I'm new to the forum. I've been a long time Turbo fan, and a few months ago I purchased a Turbo Duo RX. I had heard that the RX series has the highest rate of dying, but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway.

As it turns out, my RX is dying now. I've been playing the Valis series for a couple days now without any problems, until yesterday. When I started Valis 4, I noticed that the FMVs were taking minutes to load, and before long the FMV sound started cutting out. I guessed that there might be a problem with that disk, so I tried another CD that was working perfectly. As it turns out, that one started having FMV music problems as well.

I'm guessing that this problem has something to do with the CD reader, so does anybody know how to fix this? I really don't want to shell out another 200 dollars when all I have to do is adjust the reader.

Thanks for your time!

Actually from what I have gathered from reading here, the Duo-R and Duo-Rx are the most dependable of the duo line. If you are only getting sound issues with Redbook audio and are able to solder, you could try the sound fix that is listed here. It requires opening the system and replacing two capacitors.

Does Valis IV have FMV? I thought it just had BG/sprite animations with CD audio (ie: like most other PCE CD games).

I'd guess that the problem is the CD ROM unit. The Duo R I recently bought skips really easily. I swapped the CDROM out of my US Duo into it to make it skip less. The problem is the amount of lash between the rack and pinion gears on the laser assembly. It can't easily be adjusted.

You can buy a new CDROM unit cheap here:

There are a lot of theories abount PCE reliability accross the range. Personally I don't think any of them are more or less reliable than any of the others (all the Duos have the same drive anyway), and all of them are vastly more dependable that any current system not made by Nintendo.

Right, its the sprite animations and sound that my Duo RX is having problems with. Again, it didn't start until recently, and lately it takes about 2 minutes to load up one of those sequences.

Anyway, I can install one of those cd units and it will function normally? I'm a little inexperienced, so are there any instructions on how I would do that?

There are some people here that have bought it, and I *think* they've installed it successfully, but I'm not sure.

It would function normally, yes.
