Getting a Duo-R, mod advices (video, cap)
« on: June 09, 2015, 03:30:12 PM »
If it hasn't been recapped, I'd like it recapped. Is it easy or is the solder a pain in the butt to suck or old caps hard to remove?

Also it only has standard AV port and it won't have a cable. I could:
buy a 5 pin DIN plug and solder in AV cable
or
install a 9 pin mini DIN and use Genesis 2 AV cable

At this time I am not planning to do RGB mod but if I install the 9 pin socket, I will add in 3 color coded wires for RGB and tape it off so I could add in RGB board later.

If I go with the 9 pin mod, where is the best place to mount the port?

Luckily I still have the old NEC controller adapter that was released when they first released Duo in USA so I can use existing TG-16 controllers.  (replacing all 5 Turbo Sticks and tap can be expensive)

A Duo-R should not need to be recapped (although it certainly doesn't hurt to check the caps for bulging).  If you are going to replace the 5-pin DIN plug with a 9-PIN, get a regular DIN instead of a mini, because then you simply desolder the old one, and solder in the new one after snipping 4 of the pins off.  This will allow you to easily do the RGB mod later.

Then were would I find an AV cable or RGB that fits larger DIN?

I'll wait on ordering caps until after I got the Duo-R and see if anything is wrong.

male 5 pin DIN: $2 with free shipping, about 100 spare AV cables sitting around to hack.  15 minutes job after I get the plug

Or spend over $10 shipped for one cable already done?

I'd rather save that $8 so I can have a pack of
for lunch   :-"

You should do that then.  I think that is a better idea than adding another port.
