Author Topic: So I just played Street Fighter II Champion Edition on the PCE for the 1st time  (Read 489 times)

And it's an awesome port (really enjoyed the vibrancy of the colors and hearing the PCE take on some of the tunes), but...

I was using a 2-button controller, which requires you to use the SELECT BUTTON to toggle between punches and kicks. On my first credit, I got all the way to Bison and was defeated by him ON THE FINAL ROUND.

Guhhhhhhhhh missed opportunity, I just don't even know how I can go on with my life right now after having failed with this. I mean yeah I've played tons of SF2 over the years and clearing the game on a single credit on normal difficulty is obviously no big deal, but this is an opportunity I can never get back. :(

This port is just awesome, I also recently bought it and it's impressive.
This and many others make me wonder why NEC didn't add a 2nd controller port on their multiple revisions...

Missed !? You really need a avenue 6 pad or the hori fighter stick.

If not a 6-button controller (Hori fighting pad or sticks are my favorite), the Avenue Pad 3 at least gives you a third button that you can map to SELECT or RUN using a switch, for games like this one which use those as an action button.

Next try your luck at Strip Fighter II ...

I have a six-button pad on the way, but I was kind of enjoying playing it with the 2-button just for the challenge. The AI in all versions of the game is very similar, and there's kind of a pleasure in having to be much less aggressive and to bait the AI a lot more because it's much harder to act on reaction or pull off combos with the 2-button. Obviously the game is meant to be played with six buttons, but 2-button mode is a nice kind of challenge mode if you're a bit of a masochist or just want to see if you know the game's AI in and out (obviously I didn't since Bison stomped me).

I suck at SF2 and I just choose Chun Li and kick the whole time. I have no idea what I'm doing. I can do the Ryu fireball move and that's about it.

When I was young and had only a GT, I used to play the hell out of SF2. It became so natural to  switch between kicks and punch that I could finish the game with perfects only at max difficulty.
 
When I eventually had a Duo with AvePad6, I just couldn'd stop my thumb pushing the select button by itself  :D

Missed opportunity?  It's like a 20 minute play-through.  Your first run sounds like it was good practice...try again kiddo!  :)

I still play 2 button SFII' every now and then on my Turbo Express or sometimes when I'm too lazy to grab the 6 button controller.

I don't think difficulty is not that much harder depending on which character you use.  Probably the most difficult part is remembering if you're in kick or punch mode and pulling off a combo with both punch and kick moves.

I was suprised to see that the Megadrive version is also the same, but you press Start to change between kick and punch.

I've got a 6 button Megadrive pad but sadly no such pad for PCE :(

I sincerely think that it was one of the best choices made by NEC and Hudson : multiplayer games came very early in the lifespan of the PCE and games such as Fire Pro Wrestling -which is quite a piece of shit but was very popular in Japan-, Bomberman and Motoroader were already 4 or 5 player games. So anyway, you couldn't do without it.

On the contrary, the SNES and the Genesis both had 2 controller ports, and still you needed a multitap to play Bomberman on these systems.

Hudson and NEC clearly designed the PCE as a multiplayer machine really.

At least that's my opinion.

Good point.

I think it could also be a hardware issue. The PcE controller port is not the tougher one, its desoldering is not rare. So imagine what two excited kids could do to the poor two ports soldered side by side, especially with that short wires.
