PCE CD-ROM2 (IFU) scratching/rubbing noise
« on: February 23, 2016, 01:12:30 AM »
Hey guys! Im not only new to the forum, Im also new to the PC Engine  O:)

I got a bunch of different PCE systems last weeks, luckily the most are working well. Even my white CD-ROM2 for the IFU works well, except it makes rubbing or scratching noises. I read a bit in the froum before to get some informations, but nothing really helps. Beside that Im not really into this fixing stuff, never done that before. So I hope to get some tips without doing any big repair ;)

The CD-ROM2 got completely new caps done by someone else, not the seller. So I dont have any contact to this person, who might get it fixed. The CD-ROM works all fine, reading all discs and has no sound or grafic issues. It just makes this rubbing noise, like the CD is rubbing on the ground. I just have a few CD games, so I tested also Music CDS but with the same problem.

BUT: there is no rubbing noise with Super CD games. I wonder if they are slightly different than other CDs, thinner or lighter?! So I feel a bit helpless, since its working well with some games, with some not.

Do you have any idea what I can do?

Thanks a lot :)

Now Im really sorry!  Im searching and thinking since 3 weeks how to fix this problem and just a few minutes later after posting my problem I got it!

I just opened it again and just put some sticking soft-gum-pads (together 6 mm high) on top of the motor metal thing, so it brings the whole spin up. Now its working without any scratching noise.

Just another question now: does the motor head getting warm or hot while working/playing? Dont want molten gum inside  :?

Hey there,

I just recently changed my laser on my Turbo CD and I had a similar issue as you with the grinding.  The solution was that I had forgotten to put a tiny washer back onto one of the post (closets to the laser) when I was putting it back together.  That is why making it 6mm higher fixed your issue.

Whomever replaced the caps must have forgotten to replace that washer.

Sometimes but it's rare, the foam pads that hold the lid up can fall off or wear down. Causing the lid to push down on the CD. Maybe try holding lid up slightly different to hear if the scraping goes away. Otherwise the missing washer could be your problem.

Thanks for your help guys!

I had a look at these foam pads, they are indeed a bit weared down. But they seemed still doing their job well ;) But good to know! So then Im sure its because of this missing washer since I didnt see it when I opened the machine.
