Turbo Everdrive compatibility
« on: June 20, 2016, 03:08:24 AM »
Hi Forum,
I was skimming through the U.S. hu-card library and found that Night Creatures doesn't boot up properly, sound plays fine, also Adventure Island displays corrupted graphics when I die, but will correct itself when stage is completed or I die again, Gradius the color black turns blue after a certain amount of powerups.  So far these are the only ones that show any issues.
I have Ver. 2.4 board. Smokers rompack. And Supergrafx.

Thank you for your help in advance.

99% of the time it's bad roms.

There aren't any compatibility issues with good roms, only compatibility issues with some console mods.

Solved the problem of all 3 instances.  SuperGrafx has switch in the back labeled I & II.
I -- is for SG Hu-Cards.
II -- is for all other cards

Gradius (J)---color glitch gone
New Adventure Island (U)---Respawn graphical glitching gone
Night Creatures (U)---Is fully playable
Thanks and credit goes to DoujinDance.  His video.

Totally found this by accident while looking for a solution to another issue.

FYI ... the switch isn't for "all other HuCards" ... just those that do strange programming things and require that the VDC1 registers are mirrored.

There's not many games (IIRC) that are programmed that sloppily and require you to boot your SuperGrafx into the "II" setting ... but I could be wrong on that.

I also don't know if there's a complete list anywhere.

Understood, I just know it solved my issues, rather than have "bad" roms...although that is still a possibility as I haven't tested all roms yet.
Edit Damn auto-correct.

I have a 2.4 everdrive too and I am wondering if some of the hes files play incorrectly on this.  Some music files play fine like Coryoon but ones like Parodius, Gradius, Salamander and Jackie Chan just play incorrectly at way too speeded up.  Can others with 2.4 see if this too is the case or provide hes files that are working properly?

Both TEDs definitely do not play all hes files correctly. It is inconsistent and there are many different ways that theh play wring. Even when a track sounds like it's probably playing normal, several things might still be off.

It's possible that the some rom/code inside the HES files (individual case by case basis) doesn't initialize the hardware (assumes it already is). That would be the fault of the ripper who made them. They would need to be patched/fixed in that case.

Each version of the TED has different results for the same hes files. The same hes files play normally in winamp (other than typical emulation imperfections) using that plugin (nesplay?).

Probably because of the code from the TED OS initializing stuff before the HES runs. I had this problem with the MM2 nes2pce rom; I always ran it with TED cards so I never knew that the background color wasn't set during game boot (and emulators initialize this already), so the border color wasn't black for simple flash hucards.

yup I have no problem playing any of the HES files in something like audio overload but dumping them on an everdrive and trying to play them on real hardware to get an accurate sound is a goal that still seems out of reach

my vid.  The first HES file you hear is city hunter and that sounds fine and then I load something like Parodius HES file and you hear the difference ?
