Help Needed
« on: October 11, 2006, 07:37:01 AM »
Hi,

I need a bit of help please.

My boyfriend has always gone on about wanting a PC Engine Supergrafx.

However, I had never even heard of such a console.

I have managed to track one down for his birthday (together with a UK adaptor) and was wanting to try and get him a few games to go with it.

I understand there were only a few games made for this console but it will play other games.

Can anybody recommend which games are the best to look for.

Any help would be much appreciated as I dont have the first clue about anything to do with computer games - never mind games for a console I had never even heard of!

Thanks in advance !

There aren't that many decent games available for the SG, but these are worth getting:

Ghouls and Ghosts (Daimakaimura) (Platform game)
1941 - Counter Attack (Shoot em up)
Aldynes (Shoot em up)

However, there are loads of standard PC Engine games that will work on it. Highly recommended HuCards are:

Jackie Chan (cuteish platform action)
Devil Crash (excellent pinball)
PC Kid 1 or 2 (Cute platformers - classics)
Air Zonk (PC Denjin) (Shoot em up)
Parodius (Shoot em up)
Bloody Wolf (Action)
Super Star Soldier (shoot em up)
Soldier Blade (shoot em up)
Final Soldier (shoot em up)
Gunhed (shoot em up)
Momotaro Katsugeki (cute platformer)
Coryoon (Cute shoot em up)
Street Fighter II (Fighting)

Be sure you get Japanese versions as US (Turbografx-16) cards will not work on a Japanese Machine.

Good places to pick up games in the UK are www.videogameimports.com and www.genkivideogames.com.

There were only 5 games made strickly for the Supergrafx.
The games Sunteam Paul mentioned are excellent.
1941 is pretty rare and expensive.
If i were you I'd track down
Ghouls and Ghosts (AKA Daimakaimura) and Aldynes.

you can probably find them at japangamestock.com.  look for them under the PC Engine games.  Look under the "Hucards" and "loose hucards" sections.
There's a dropdown menu to view the prices in US dollars instead of Yen.

I recommend "Daimakaimura" first, which you'll probably find easier under "Ghouls 'N Ghosts".

It's the best and most popular of the SuperGrafx games in proportion to price. You shouldn't have trouble trouble finding it either complete are close to complete for under $40 on eBay.

Also, since he's specifically mentioned wanting this particular system, I suggest only purchasing real SuperGrafx games to go along with it, since he probably either already has regular PC Engine games or knows which he'd want to pick up himself.

I recommend at least checking eBay first and when you do, search seperately for "Supergrafx" and Super Grafx". Adding "PC Engine" to the search will only limit your results.

One last thing, if you come across the SuperGrafx game "Battle Ace" and it looks like a good deal, make sure that you don't pay more than $10 for it complete.

Oh boy, a nerd's wife in charge of purchasing a super obscured video game console online with no info whatsoever :D , that's a sticky situation.

I recommend Granzort.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

LOL

Thanks guys.

I have found a couple of those mentioned on Ebay

What sort of prices should I be paying for these?

Don't pay much more than £20 for this one (Daimakaimura/Ghouls N Ghosts).

This one's already priced around the limit of what you should ever pay for it (1941). It used to sell reasonably complete for like $99 U.S. or so. But you can save money on SuperGrafx titles if you buy them complete minus the cardboard outer sleeve.

Right now, the only people selling this game are trying to bleed potentional customers, but noone's biting. You'll see the prices come down again soon enough.

Don't pay more than like £6 for this game. It sucks and is the most common of the SGX titles. Most people never bothered opening it, so there's a large supply of sealed copies.

I'm assuming that you're looking on eBay.co.uk because you live in the U.K. However, a lot of PC Engine stuff goes for well above market value there for a number of potential reasons.

The best deals and selection to be had are from japanese sellers on eBay.com. Here in Canada, packages sent from Japan by airmail usually arrive within 2 or 3 business days, no matter how much it may defy time & physics.
