Region mod issue, Obey chip (Solved)
« on: November 01, 2015, 03:48:25 AM »
So, I just installed the Obey region chip from http://www.tg16pcemods.com/ in a Duo-R.

Everything looks great connection wise from what I can tell and lifted ping 29 on the 6280, then grounded it with a wire.

I realized a bit to late, I didn't read through the entire .pdf before buying it. I bought the wrong type of switch. Just a two pole on and off switch. I am looking for some 3-pole I like but thought I could still test the mod.

I assume in a 3-pole switch on - off - on, when one on is on the other is off. So I should just be able to touch one wire "A" to the center wire "B" correct to make a connection? Then to test the other side just connect the "B" and "C" wires correct?

If I am wrong in my assumption about the above please correct me.

But when I try the above scenarios I can still only play JP HuCards. It does not matter what wire is connected to "B" they both play JP just fine but no US cards.

Any info, help, is appreciated.

Edit:
I just thought about touching all 3wires together and trying it but I don't want to do that if bad things will happen. Ok, tried with all three wires touching and tried with all 3 wires not touching.

The JP game will play with either wire "A" or "C" touching the "B" wire. The JP game will also play if I have no wires attached. Neither game plays when I touch all 3 wires at the same time.

a is 5v c is ground
connecting b to either but not both is correct
if jp games play both ways something wasnt done right

Thanks for that response thesteve. I updated my first post with more things I tried.

The one that sticks out to me is that the JP game will play even with no wires touching.

This mod seems pretty straight forward "H"uCard and "P"CB plus the pin number for the holes. I used different color wire to make things easy to see. Green for PCB and blue for HuCard. Pulled the 5v from pin 38, ground at the outer edge of the board. Pin 29 on the 6280 was lifted and ground at the same spot as the mod chip.

If the chip on the Obey mod chip wasn't sitting right could that cause this issue? Maybe I will try to reflow it real quick here and see what happens.

Don't confuse pole with position.  You want a SPDT (single pole double throw).  You want a 3 position switch with a common middle pin and on-on throw configuration.
Turbo fan since 1991 after owning my first system.

Maybe this will help. This is a picture of the OBEY chip installed in my duo.

Turbokon is correct about the switch. I used on like this switch.

Hopefully this info helps.

Ok... I just want to say thank you all for replying.

When I reflowed the chip on the Obey PCB and then tested it, it now works as intended.

Granted I still need to get the proper switches at this point but a quick test by holding the wires together  allowed me to see a US game load up.

This is my first Duo-R repair and mod and I went all out on it. RGB, region mod, new caps, and the original problem was that it needed a new Hop-M3 was all. I have the 8-port on the back for composite and/or RGB and then reflowed the controller mini-din and the power input spots in case there was any cracking issues.

All I need is a switch and I can put it back together.

Much appreciated all!!

Also, this is a good switch for this mod?

It is SPDT on-on, it looks a lot like the ones I have except they are the proper Double throw spec. I just hope they are not any bigger than the ones I have.

A thousand pardons for the necro-bump, but I just ran into the same issue.

I couldn't get the thing working at all for the life of me, double/triple checked everything.

Reflowed the tiny chip on the Obey flexy-board and it's working perfectly.

YAY and sheesh (what a pain!).
