Why are so many indie games so cartoony looking?

While I like both realistic and cartoonish stuff, too many of these games lean toward the cartoon side of things. Why is this the case? A game doesn't need to be cartoony to be retro looking.

I'll blame marketing. Indie game companies prolly use the retro cartoon look to help tap that nostalgia feels. Or, it's just easier to make pixel art in a small studio.
I do not keep up much with new releases much (other than what I hear about from podcasts), but I wonder if we see more info/press/news on "cartoon retro" games because Google knows we visit forums like here
