Yep, the writers like their 80s home computers, especially the Spectrum! Unfortunately there isn't much coverage of NEC related games due to most of it bypassing the UK.
There was an article on Policenauts for the NEC PC98 not to long ago and apparently there is going to be an article about the PC Engine coming up which I look forward to!

Yes, I had a subscription to Retro Gamer (I'm in the US). Of course, the mag was cancelled and I don't think I was given my full refund. I got a few issues of some other UK video game magazine, but it didn't leave much impression. Edge, however, is pretty fun, though I haven't read it in years.

I loved Retro Gamer, although I don't think the articles were as well researched as they should have been. Of course, US magazines are even more atrocious when it comes to this sort of thing...

Did you know it was relaunched under a different publisher?

The last couple of issues had a good article about the serious collectors who collect prototype machines, games, Dev kits and the sort. Some of the stuff they've got is mind boggling!

Yeah, I eventually found out that Retro was back, but I haven't had the $$$ to get it again.

I can tell you this, though: in one of last few issues (first publisher), an article mentioned some song that was related to a game on one of the old microcomputers. The song was called: "Everyone's a Wally." I was intrigued and someone eventually found the song for me... but it was atrocious! I didn't even know what a "Wally" was, so I had to ask. Finally, I could fully "appreciate" the lyrics.

IIRC, a cassette single with the song accompanied the software. Insanity.

I haven't been paying much attention to the whole collection of prototype machines and home computers but your mentions of Retro Gamer have me intrigued.  Got a site that has scans of the articles or something? I'd sure like to read them.
