Need a new A/V cable for your PCE?
« on: October 27, 2006, 10:42:58 AM »
I just posted this in turbo2k.net, but I figured someone else might find it useful here - so here it is:

-----
Here's something you might be able to use to make a proper stereo AV cable.  (been meaning to do it myself also, as I have 3 systems, but only 1 good a/v cable).

http://www.geocities.com/duo_cable/

It's in Japanese, but pictures do most of the talking.  Basically, all you need is a regular Stereo AV cable, and a DIN5 plug.  And it says to be careful and use a AV cable that's on the thinner side, or else it won't fit into the DIN5 plug later.

Cut one end of the AV cable, and connect each of the video, r audio and l audio to the diagram you see (VIDEO, Rch, Lch, respectively).

You don't need to do anything with the +5V pin, and you use the ground pin against the frame of the DIN5 plug, but the manual says that's optional (only if your signal isn't stable) - most people shouldn't need it.

Just for proper credit, I grabbed this info from Yahoo Japan auction website here, and threw it on a geocities website - hopefully people can use it in the future.

And the disclaimer - My Japanese no where near perfect, so if anyone reads differently - let us know.  And if you blow up your system, don't come crying to me!

Or you could just buy it for $10 + shipping on ebay  :?

I tried this method for my model 1 genesis long ago and then for my duo. It works and doesn't work. It will work if you already have the av plugged in the TV before powering the unit on. But if you turn on the system and then plug in the av and accidentally touch the edge of the TV's av input a small electrical feedback will happen and reset your unit. It frustrated me for a long time and i tried every possible way of soldering the wires on the ground pin and the surrounding shield and then both. Even butchered many stereo av cables in the process. In the end i bought cables from TZD and haven't had a problem.
It would be great if someone knows why the feedback happens and how to fix it. I still have the cables i made and plan to burn them for their insolence.

I used this method to make an a/v cable for my supergrafx, worked out great. Ended up costing me like $5.50 in parts, gold plated rca too I might add.

You have to solder the ground shielding the rca wires to the metal shell of the din plug. I noticed this wasn't shown in those photos.

I tried that with no change. If you feel adventurous and dont mind if it gets feedback and resets then turn on your system with a game playing. Now slowly remove the red plug and touch the tv's av edge. If nothing happens then you did something right and must be explored. Or the super grafx can absorb the electrical feedback and you should try another system like a model 1 genesis or a turbo duo if you got them.

You can buy din cables, used for midi or something, from the U.K. fairly cheap that work better than the official cable.

You wind up with an extra cord or two, but I just snipped off the extras and painted the base over.

Be careful buying replacement Duo/SMS/Genesis AV cables through eBay. For a long time a crooked seller was selling some garbage ones as 'brand new' which barely worked and produced an image similar to a pre-8-bit console with a rotten RF switch.
