Sorry to necropost, but what the hell? It looks like the SFII hucard didn't actually need to be any thicker. They could have just used a smaller label.

no, the black board has circuitry that fills that whole thing up.  It needs to jut down where it does, and as a result needs the cap on top.

Yeah, but the black board doesn't look any thicker. Or is it?

That's what I was talking about. You know how 2-Mbit games have ~5cm labels, and 4-Mbit+ games have ~4cm labels? SFII could have been released as a normal size HuCard, but with a smaller label. Or they could have used a sticker, like the Arcade Card Duo. I wonder why they used the hump instead? Maybe they had a large supply of TenNoKoe plastic left over...

Yeah, they had extra TenNoKoe plastic left over

Or, it was to create the illusion that the SF II' HuCARD was more "special" than your average HuCARD (you're getting your money's worth).

I don't have a clue, really .

Interesting to see what's under it. Anyone open a Tennokoe Bank up to see if it's the same way (nothing underneath) ?

Those who can read properly, already knew that on previous page :)

Sweet!  Now I know I can hide illegal contraband in my Street Fighter HuCards and make it through customs.

You can certainly hide it in there. Customs may still confiscate your HuCards, though.
