Retro Gamer Magazine - PC Engine / PCFX Feature
« on: March 31, 2009, 05:56:48 AM »
Retro Gamer is a great magazine, I read it cover to cover every month, anyone else on here read it?

Issue 40 had a ten page PC-Engine feature and issue 53 a great PCFX feature with an interview with Aaron Nanto.

I used to pick up single issues, then I got a subscription to it years ago, before they went on temporary hiatus...

It was a blast to read, especially the micro computer stuff (which we knew nothing about, here in the States, especially pre-internet),
however, some of the articles were not thoroughly fact-checked (ambiguous, overly-broad, or oft-repeated-never-substantiated statements should be qualified) which certainly made it feel amateurish.

That said, I was more than happy with the overall spirit of the mag and its contents. I was never a fan of the discs they included with each issue: they were usually pretty lame.

I especially liked the interviews / retrospectives of designers / development houses.

Trivia: A lame novelty song entitled "Everyone's a Wally" was mentioned in one issue (perhaps related to a game called Wally?), and a friend helped track down an mp3. IT WAS HORRIBLE. But I listened to it about 80 times more than I should have.

The mag no longer has the disc every month and has been taken over by a completely different editor. However its all good and it's a damn good read much more so than it ever was. If you have chance I'd recommend picking up a recent issue just to see what has been done.
