If you're not going to sell, then who cares?  Do a completed item search on ebay or something.

I can't find most of the games on ebay. I was just curious what people thought because I want to have an idea of the monetary value for insurance purposes. I figured this would be a good place to try to find the information.

I should have mentioned, after I said I wouldn't probably sell my collection, that I wanted to get a value for insurance purposes. I apologive to anyone reading the post. I didn't mean to mislead anyone.

 .......$2,800.....  I have no idea. The problem with using Ebay as a guide is the prices fluctuate. When I started checking out ebay at the beginning of this year, you could rarely find Dracula X for under $150-$160 if not higher. Now I see them regularly for $120-$130 so I mean be your best judge and check around Ebay throughly. Thats my advice....good or not, hell I have no idea, I just buy what I want, for what ever price I see as resonable. Some people see $200 as a reasonable price to pay for a rare game, I almost always would have to disagree with that statement. Like Magical Chase, that price of the game is insane...Same with Sapphire. Although I want that one really bad  :)

I agree with the spirit of what you say, that $200 is a lot of money for a game.  But you have presented the very reason for the prices:  you want one badly.  So do a lot of people, be it for the gameplay or for completing a collection.

In my world, $200 for a rare game is not unreasonable.  Of course I also collect Neo Geo (not really AES anymore though), so that skews it a bit.  But supply and demand really dictates prices.  You say you really want it, but do you have it?  If a bunch of people really want a game and said game happens to be unbelievably rare, then the price HAS to go up.  Someone always blinks ;)

check out the digitalpress price guide.  that will give you a ballpark figure.  prices for some games fluctuate, but digital press will give you something to work with. sure, some games can go for more on ebay sometimes...

I guess I should rephrase. Its not that I would disagree that its unreasonable, its just not reasonable to me. I am not a collector. I don't get a game so that I can keep it on a shelf and have people admire it. I am a collector because I want to play the game. If I bought Sapphire at the going rate (what $300, $350?) and I got it home played it, but OH SHIT! I just freakin' broke the case....it wouldn't bother me. If I bent up the Manual, it wouldn't bother me. Cause I want to play the game, not keep it in shrink wrapping. Thats a sort of a different perspective than some.

But, also Classic Gaming is only one hobby and I like to buy for each of them. So $200 on one thing for one of my hobbies, is just to much for me. I mean if I were to someday have that much money lying around...then I would pick it up. But till then, I will just get my copy of Dead Moon, Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder....any number of other shooters and enjoy them. The only reason I really want it is to witness it. See the graphics everyone talks about. Not because I HAVE to have a new shooter or anything like that. So its not so much the cost that is unreasonable, its the value of the product that is unreasonable to me....

Oh, I agree with you completely, that it would be great to have the chance to play the games and not have the price be so high that it's prohibitive.

I'd love to drive a new Ferrari too   .  That wouldn't be sitting in my garage.  But I don't think the price will be dropping anytime soon.

I think it would be great, with the way technology works now, if companies take a look at emulation and such as a viable business option rather than as it being counter productive.

For example look at what Nintendo is planning with "Revolution". Complete backwards compatability with ALL prior Nintendo games. Games will cost a particular amount to download, then that game is yours. That is the way companies should go.

PC games on direct download, it is fairly safe way to purchase games and use them. It is also growing. Why can't the makers of console games use this method the same way. Legal emulators, reasonably priced, with downloadable ROM files also reasonably priced. I mean the way it is, a company like Hudson isn't making any money by people selling there titles on Ebay, but they could be making a profit off the titles in other ways. This would probably bring down the prices of the original but wouldn't neccisarily change the collectors market. They could create entire systems like Itunes for games. I mean it isn't like they can control the pirateing of game products any more than they do with music and or movies. So in responce both of those genres have begun shifting to digital options for purchasing/using there products. I think that videogame companies would be missing an opportunity if they didn't attempt something like this. Maybe after Revolution shows the way...I hope personally.
