Is there a difference between Turbo Grafx & Turbo Duo?
« on: October 18, 2009, 01:09:29 PM »
I was wondering if there is some technical difference between the Turbo Duo and the Turbo Grafx 16 when reading the HuCards? The reason I ask is back when these systems where on the market, I purchased what looks like a home made converter. They had two available, one for each system. The one I got was for the Turbo Grafx 16 so that I could use it on my Express. It will not work in the Duo.

I think they (converters) were different only by length and possibly thickness.  I think the opening of the hu slot was different, nothing internally.
Another douche trying to obtain a full Turbo collection.  119/146 so far.  Got a long way to go. Half way there. Hit the 100 mark. ich bein ein obeyer

The TurboDuo compatible converter has a yellow wire soldered and glued down along one of its sides. I cannot tell you the technical difference between consoles, just the converter to use on the duo. Perhaps this extra wire is needed to ground something, idk. :)

To my knowledge the only difference is the physical shape. The early converters wouldn't physically fit in a Duo without hacking them to pieces.

The version you have pictured there was something that came later, and from what I remember worked just fine in a Duo except with later Arcade Card games for some reason. Everyone I knew with a copy of Mad Stalker or Sapphire would always have problems with this converter.

BTW, that thing must almost double the hight of an Express once the HuCard is in the slot!

Yes it is very ugly. It is nothing that you would want to carry with you. It creates a situation where if you don't watch out you could slap yourself in the face. I think at the time I picked it up for around $19.00. Hard to remember, it has been so long ago.

I have seen them in recent months pop up on eBay for an unreal price of $159.00.
I originally purchased this for the main purpose of importing Street Fighter II. I had the first portable SF II in my hands!
The card lacks any componets and yet it shows some age by giving me a graininess on screen. I have been giving some serious thought to getting the Core system.

The "barney" converter fits much more nicely in a TG-16. OK, it looks pretty silly too, but not that silly. A mod is always best.

I remember playing SFII' back in the day on a TG Express. It was totally "high end" in an era were the GB Color was more than half a decade away, even with it being more or less impossible to control.
