...and it isn't nearly as good as Dynastic Hero.

Bull. Shit.

Didn't you hear? Its worth a third as much, if that. Its obviously not as good.

Air Zonk, Splash Lake, Gate of Thunder, Parasol Stars, and Cadash could be purchased combined for less than DE2, and each is much better than DE2 as well.  Each is better than Dynastic Hero too.

Just because a game is expensive, it doesn't mean it can't be better than a cheaper game; and vice versa.

I just don't understand why the DE games are so popular.  They are Gauntlet, but worse.

NOT EVEN CLOSE.  I can't think of any way (besides nostalgia) that Gauntlet trumps the DE games.

Yah...if we're comparing the original Gauntlets 1 or 2 vs. DE 1 or 2, then i'm for DE. It wouldn't be fair to compare with the new Gauntlets for say the Ps2. Those ones have evolved more into rpg/action quite nicely IMO.

Am I honestly the only one that thinks the DE games are pretty average?  Especially DE1?

I'm sure you're not alone, but you're certainly in the minority.  Different strokes for different folks, eh?

I guess for me it was the overall presentation of DEII that floored me back in1993.  I mean 5 player simultaneous role playing game play?!?! C'mon!!

I remember playing the game single player mode, and then a friend playing single player mode and getting really far.  We started a new party using both of our characters and were able to continue playing through the game together.   This can be done x5!  Wouldn't that be an experience?

We should start a thread posting our passwords of our farthest characters and meet up sometime and go through the game!!

Not to encourage further thread derailment, but here's my take on Dungeon Explorer.

Dungeon Explorer, Ys, Blazing Lazers and Parasol Stars were the games I owned that made my Genesis friends feel uncertain back in the day- there was just no disputing the quality of games like that.  I honestly don't see how anyone in their right frame of mind can call Dungeon Explorer average.  It just had that magic feel- incredibly transporting for an early release 3 meg hu.  And the bang for your buck- so many sweet ass bosses and levels, unlockable characters, 5-player action, lovely chip tunes- and it just had more gravity than Gauntlet- which felt like an endless slog n' slash quarter munching 100-enemies-surrounding-you run.  Dungeon Explorer will always be a heartfelt memory of mine.  One of the best times I've had playing a videogame.

DE has my favorite chiptunes out of the entire US Turbo library. :) Followed closely by Legendary Axe.

I've always referred to Gauntlet IV as a Dungeon Explorer rip off.
