GameFan Magazine
« on: January 05, 2011, 10:56:09 AM »
Went to Borders today and ran into a magazine called "GameFan."

It's a bigger magazine than your standard EGM size but the pages are awfully reminiscent of the "GameFan" I grew up with in the early 90's.

Do any of you remember it?  Anyone have a clue if this new "GameFan" is related to that older pub?

Edit:  Ah ha, it is a relaunch.  I had no idea!

I would probably buy it if it weren't so god damn giant... and if I cared much about new games these days.

Wasn't that the magazine with some buff dude with a monitor as its head?

I remember initially being attracted to it because it had a LOT of pics, but then quickly realized that they loved like every single game (even the real stinkers), and it quickly lost credibility with me.

Yeah, I remember old Game Fan (Die Hard Game Fan). And I've seen a couple of issues of the relaunch.

The fun of Game Fan was the fact that it started out as a catalog for the Die Hard Game Club import store chain and as a result focused heavily on imports. As the years have gone by and the influence of Japanese developers has declined since the early to mid 90s when Game Fan was at its peak the novelty wore off, which led to the publications death around 2000 or so.

The re-launch lacked the same uniqueness.

Yeah, the environment that spawned Gamefan back in the day just isn't there anymore. Now what are they going to show us, the same pics of Bayonetta that everyone else is showing...only larger? In the 90s the games that sold well in Japan were completely different (and far more numerous) than what was selling in the US. Obviously everyone here knows this since the PCE library is so many times more diverse and large than the TG-16 one. That...isn't so much the case anymore. The "top ten" lists from Japan are pretty similar to the top ten lists in the US with the main difference being which sports the sports stuff focuses on, and arab killing simulators (in Japan the arab killing simulators are replaced with pedophiliac galget shite).

I bought a few issues of Gamers Republic and Play (also his mags) before I realized all this.

As for why you can't subscribe; I would imagine that this is because this mag is highly unlikely to be in publication for long. They don't want to be in a situation where they have to issue refund checks, and they realy don't want what happen to GameGO! (sell subscriptions and then fold after one issue).

EDIT: Anyone who was hardcore into imports in the 90s will get every reference in this song

Now can you imagine making a version of this song upgraded to 2010? I can't.
