Bonk 3 Super CD question
« on: June 28, 2011, 07:05:39 AM »
Hey guys, I have a question for ya.  Before I left to go on vacation, I popped Bonk 3, the Super CD version, into my Duo.  Most CD games, when you do a soft reset by hitting select and run together, will take you back to the Super CD load menu.  I noticed when I did this with Bonk 3 however, that it just went back to the title screen of the game.  Just like it would if it were a Hu Card game.   Is this normal and are there more CD games that reset this way?  Just curious... :?:

My Bonk 3 CD does the same thing. I am not sure if there are other games that do this.
SignofZeta: What a quintessentially PCEFX thread. Someone complains about nothing, multiple Bible-length posts discussing who's a bigger a$$hole follow. You're both pretty big a$$holes. Let's call it a tie.

Thats interesting. I wonder how many CD games actually do this?  What would be the reason for it NOT defaulting back to the Super CD load screen?

Considering Bonk 3 CD is based on the hucard I'd guess that it's the only U.S. title to do so.  A less likely possibility is that the programers did it when they were tinkering with the code to add the redbook audio and the VS. feature.

Since Bonk 3 was the last game released in the States it doesn't really have any other contemporaries to compare.

Yep, I suspect that's the case. That the game is basically a HuCard on a CD with a few tweaks added for the CD version (and some animation removed) and that the programmers merely forgot to add in the Select + Start returns to BIOS screen function.

Tell me more!  I know the U.S. and JP cards have regional differences, but I didn't know the SCD had any changes other than the ones already mentioned.

I think it's just that the super-sized Bonk doesn't change when you eat meat.

The programmers didn't want Bonk 3 disc being swapped out....It's your duty to play through and beat it without changing games.:lol:

This documents it a bit http://www.thebrothersduomazov.com/2009/11/bonk-3-cd-bonks-big-adventure.html

To quote it "Worthy of note are the missing frames for angry Bonk when you are giant Bonk. Curiously missing from this CD edition, when Bonk eats meat while he is giant his appearance does not change like it should. In fact, he stays as normal Bonk despite possessing angry Bonk's normal abilities. Chalk up another point for TTi!"

You mean chalk up a point for the limitations of CD ram.  It's not like they made a mistake; it just won't fit.

I believe that there's more than that. I think that it was covered in the screenshot comparison thread.

Yeah, even some of the walking frames for normal large bonk are missing in the CD version.

If the game goes directly back to the title screen menu with reloading it from CD, then that means they have to leave that in memory at all times. I.e. they could have used that space in ram to hold the some of the missing frames of large bonk.

Also, Spriggan Mark 2 doesn't reset the game when you press run+select. It pops up a menu asking you first, if you want to restart. Run+select is just a software thing Hudson or NEC imposed on developers (not unlike Sega and requirements for default button actions for A/B/C, and minimum requirements for options menu, etc). It's not a bios call or such. It's completely up to the software to decide what to do when run and select are pressed together. CD system or hucard, doesn't matter.

I think that the Run+Select thing was implemented because the hardware itself doesn't have a reset button, and consoles of the age generally did.

As much as some people on this forum hate it, "Turrican" doesn't automatically go back to the title screen when you press Run+Select... you have to hold it for 3 seconds and *then* it resets.
