Give me the goss on the www.pcenginefx.com forum
« on: June 29, 2011, 10:59:34 AM »
Its a good forum you guys have going here. Lots of active memebers and genuiely interesting discussions and lots of them!

Just wondered if anyone could fill me in on the background of this place. How long have you all been positing here and how has the forum changed over time?

Have you had any really interesting characters that have popped up over the years? Any legandary moments?

I have been a regular poster on another forum since about 2006 and we have had some really funny moments over the years!

What have been the highs and lows of this place?

SignofZeta: What a quintessentially PCEFX thread. Someone complains about nothing, multiple Bible-length posts discussing who's a bigger a$$hole follow. You're both pretty big a$$holes. Let's call it a tie.

The highs are every time you play a Turbo/PCE game (even the not so good ones), and of course the saga of 85% new.

The best lows are in the hall of shame.  :D

The forum has changed over the years in that originally it was populated mostly by people who had been into the Turbo for over a decade, or since its heydey. Some of those people are still around, but nowadays there seems to be a high turnover of people with a passing interest in the console due, I'm guessing, to the exposure via the Virtual Console.

One awful side effect of this has been a large influx of people over the past few years whose single goal is to amass an "instant collection" at any cost. These people then grow tired of their collection a month or two later, sell it off, and disappear back into the Internet.

LOL

my major question is: Do people amass complete collection, then just take a picture with a thumbs up?

It seems that there have been a bout 7 or so ppl since ive been here (started lurking in 2006) that have done this then just sold everything off almost as quickly.

Is it for the street cred?  #-o

... the Virtual Console.

Ohh yeah I keep forgetting about that.

Nat's points pretty much nailed the big stuff.

The repair threads have really taken off.  I can't believe how much information is available now compared to the one cob-job, mono, TurboExpress sound fix in 2005.  I think the repair forum has also added a subtle element of civility to the boards and given people a common cause and something productive to think about, even if they're not directly involved in the tech work.

There's a couple fewer hot heads and a bit less drama around here than there used to be, believe it or not.

While the high turnover Nat mentioned mostly keeps pace with the new members, more boards have been added and there's definitely more daily activity.

The closing of TZD and Redfrog drama sucked.  The current ebay trends and gouging suck (believe it or not there was a time when we didn't have a "gouging" thread).  The trickle of official attention from Hudson when the Virtual Console launched was exciting for a second. The LD-ROM games are a bit less mysterious than they used to be.  The amount of youtube videos and online reviews has really grown.  I remember excitedly watching all of Aaron's videos when I first found the site because I still hadn't seen footage of some of those games in 2005.

One other thing of note with regards to the background is that a large number of people used something called the "Turbo list" which was run by BT. Garner. It was a mailing list where you would reply and everyone as part of the list would receive an email. Somewhere around 2006 or so the turbo list rebooted itself (I think it changed domains) and just for sheer efficiency a lot of people using the mailing list signed up here since using a web forum was easier than digging through constant emails.

I have been lurking on this forum since 2002.  I finally got my US Duo back from my brother around 2005.  Right when I got it back I had the glorious sound issue with my Duo.  If it wasn't for D-Lites guide and one other poster who found out what the other cap was I needed to replace, I would have been out of a US Duo.  I was able to fix it all myself thanks to the help of everyone here at the forums.  It's a great place if you need help on all things Turbo/PC-Engine related.  A lot of us here are also into anything video game related and not just PC-Engine/TG-16.  Welcome to the forums Sleepy Gnome!  BTW that name is freaking awesome!  :D
