Totally Lost YS II
« on: July 29, 2011, 08:34:35 AM »

I have played YS  up to the point where in book 2 you end up in the Solomon Shrine section.  I have been in canal west to the point where Lilia and companions turn to stone after you get the master key from her.

Then I have explored the locked doors in the surrounding area and have found the Magic of Timestop and the Iron Shield.

Now I am totally, totally lost ..............

After randomly wandering around for near 3 hours I have looked at the walk through over at game FAQ for the first time.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/turbocd/918280-ys-book-i-and-ii/faqs/7622

I think I am at the start of the section headed "Subsection 5: Draining the Canals"

The guile says "First, head to the room where you got the password" and I have no idea where this bit is (I have not played the game for a few weeks do I cannot remember!)

After  hours of randomly wandering around I ask you guys n girls for help!

The password room is the meeting room at the east of the shrine and in the north of that area.

If that's the part where you overhear a conversation, I think that you need to be in monster form to understand what they're saying.

That part of the game is where it all fell apart for me. Those games are hyped so much (Ys I and II), but I felt let down after the Solomon Shrine nonsense in II. Part I is a pretty decent game, but II felt really cobbled together..... or something.

I've only ever played through it once, I'll have to go back and see how I feel a second time around.

I think it was a case of people hyping the game SO MUCH that nothing could ever live up to what I was expecting. Keep in mind I didn't play through the Ys games for the first time until like 2006. I just never got into RPGs until the last few years.

I was only joking. That was someone's response when I dared to say that Chrono Trigger isn't 'teh greatest game evAR'. :P

I completely agree that not all of Ys II is designed well, and it's one of my favorite games. That particular stretch took me a while to get past the first time and used to be my least favorite part of the game.

Despite the goofy voice acting, I found Ys III to be my favorite followed by IV. III has the best music, IMO and I slightly prefer the sidescrolling aspect. The design in II, Solomon Shrine in particular, seems really poor.

I'll play through them all again one of these days and see if my opinions change.

I feel the same way about Ys II as nat. I love the games but everytime I sit to replay Ys I and II from the beginning I get to Solomon Shrine and get lost and confused. If I had them growing up I would probably have had the patience to get through that section.

Book 1 is much better than 2...  but both are classics!

No way. Ys II is much longer, has more towns, more dungeons and bosses, more items, more story, upgrades to gamplay (love the transform magic), and not to mention a lot best music in from Ys II. Ys II is just bigger and better.

Solomon Shrine is a problem for almost everyone. Not continuously playing the game (i.e. taking too long of breaks) isn't a good thing for part 2. Just keep at it and you'll get through it. There might be even be some playthrough videos that you could check, to help you reacquainte yourself with the area.

Yeah, I remember getting stuck on Ys II two previous attempts in the 90s, then finally beating it on my third attempt in 2003.  I'd imagine it was in Solomon Shrine as well.

I'd also say that I was overall more enjoyable than II.  It just seemed to flow better.

I played 1 and 2 for basically the first time about 6 months ago  8-[  yeah blasphemy I know.  Honestly, I thought Darm tower was more annoying than Solomon Shrine was.  But I thoroughly enjoyed playing through both!   The whole game (1 and 2 together) is nice because its a shorter RPG, but not so short that you dont feel satisfied.  Granted I struggled in all the usual places, on the whole it was a nice experience.  And the music is top notch!
