Need opinions on some games...
« on: August 10, 2011, 09:57:11 AM »
I'm going to buy a couple more Turbografx games. As there's not much to choose now, I've only found games not mentioned as much when people talk about the best TG games. What are your opinions on these games?

-Double Dungeons
-Ordyne
-Dragon Spirit
-Space Harrier
-Pac-Land
-Victory Run

I have all of those but Space Harrier

Double Dungeons is a lousy first person quasi RPG

Ordyne is a decent Cute Em up, it's my second favorite game on the list. Great atmosphere and a nice aesthetic.

Dragon Spirit is a decent shmup, I was never a huge fan of it though other people might tell you it's the best game on the list.

Pac-Land is pretty great, I really like Platformers and it's a fun one. I do have somewhat of an attachment to this game as it was one of the first games I got for the system when I was younger besides Keith Courage and Bonk and I played the crap out of it, but even today I enjoy it. If you're looking for a complicated platformer look elsewhere but if you're looking for good running and jumping fun this is it

Victory Run is a decent racer

In my opinion Victoly Run is crap.  Better off playing rad racer on the NES
Ordyne is a nice shootie, if you're a fan of the arcade version you might be a bit disappoint
Dragon Spirit is pretty awesome dragon vertical shooter.
Space Harrier is a nice somewhere in the middle port of the 'cade classic.
Pac-Land is pretty average, but funny as hell.  Good memories of the cartoon series.
double dungeons is horrific.
The f*ck?  Horrific?  Why the shit is all this Double Dungeons hate??

It's a two player simultaneous dungeon romp.  You get lost in dungeons and fight baddies.  1 player and 2 player can run around, strategise and double team floor bosses, buy potions, level up, fight each other.. etc etc.  Pretty standard dungeon romp.  Music is well done, and the animation of the dungeons scrolling (albeit not as good as Phantasy Star on SMS) is really smooth!
I had a blast with the game! If the game had a bit more depth (all the dungeons look the same) and was more customizable it would be an excellent title! It's worth the <$10 it usually fetches and I think it's worth a play.
Is it the best game of it's type?  No.
Is it horrific?  f*ck NO!

Stop the Double Dungeons hate!

These Double Dungeon haters obviously lack taste and friends (it's best played two-player).

I think that people who hate DD probably didn't give it a real play through or maybe just watched a video of it. Or the type of person who only plays popular RPGs and thinks that the story is the most/only important part and that RPG gameplay is boring and that you should never have to grind...

Double Dungeons does have a good number of fans on here, myself included.  On the Action-to-RPG scale, DD is to Might and Magic as Zelda is to Final Fantasy.  The scrolling and action is fast.  The chiptune is sweet.  The two-player mode is great.  The replay value is good and I never tire of sitting down blasting through a couple dungeons.  If you need maps they're all printed in one of the hint books.

Ordyne - a good, two-player-simultaneous horizontal shooter.  I'd recommend it if you're a casual gamer, if you're looking for a serious, difficult, arcade shooter, go for...

Dragon Spirit.  Good, but I've never gotten particularly into it.  When I'm looking to play an old chip shooter I gravitate toward Galaga or Cyber-Core (pun not intended).

Space Harrier - does one thing and does it well.  Still, I get bored after ten minutes.

Pac-Land - Good.  Reminds me of Space Harrier in that they're both repetitive, old arcade games that just keep getting harder.

Victory Run is one of the harder racers out there.  The real challenge is learning how to slow down on different terrain so your car doesn't fall apart.  Frustrating if you like to just put the pedal to the metal and go.

I don't like Double Dungeons.  Maybe it's not my type of game, but getting lost in dungeons that all look the same is not fun.  I played it with a friend and we agree, the game is boring.  Shortly after, I got rid of the game.

Did you play long enough to beat the first dungeon?

Yes, we got past the first dungeon.  I don't remember how far we got, but we played it for hours.

DD may not be "horrific" but I personally wouldn't recommend the game.

DD is one of my favorite Express games.  I'd never attempt to beat the game (Express or otherwise) but I've found the first few levels are a lot of fun.  The enemies near the end of the game get really bizarre (I don't remember how far in I got back in the day, but I remember having to fight a writing desk with a  floating inkwell).  Yes, it's mindless and monotonous, but it's fun to play for 20-30 minute spurts, and is pretty fun with a friend.  I wish there was a way to see a map of where you've been, though.

I really enjoy Pacland, although I'm not certain I would care for it if I didn't have fond memories of playing it in the arcade way back in the day. It is still one of my most played hucards.

Space Harrier is an excellent game, and at release it was the best home version of the game. These days there are better conversions on newer systems so you may go that way instead. However, if you have a Turboexpress it is a must have, it is a great portable game.

ordyne is a good 2 player cute-em-up.
dragon spirit is tough till you get the hang of it, but a great game.
victory run i dont really care for, its too complicated for its own good and final lap twin is a much better racing game.
i dont normally like video pinball games however devils crush is tons of fun.
