Super CDROM2 -> SuperGrafx missing cable
« on: September 19, 2005, 08:08:10 PM »
Just got back from a whirlwind shopping trip in Japan.  (For a collector of any sort--Japan is just totally unreal!)  I basically went hunting for PCE stuff.  I got a PC Engine Super CDROM 2 unit at Superpotato--but it doesn't have the little lead cable that goes from the SGX to the Super CDROM2.

Does anyone have the specs on this cable?  It sounds like it should be easy to reproduce somehow.  Or--can I just plug in both the SGX and the Super CDROM2 and not use the AC lead?  The SGX power supply doesn't fit in the smaller hole once the CDROM is plugged in and overlaid on the original AC adapter port. But I think I can either buy a new power supply with a smaller plug or shave off some plastic from the existing one to get it to work.

It wouldn't matter if you had it.  That cable only fits the CoreGrafx and PCE.  The SuperGrafx needs a bigger cable, which really means you need to use two AC adapters.

So what do you mean--I need to somehow fit the Supergrafx power supply through that little hole in the Super CDROM2 and use 2 power supplies with it?

I think I'll stick to my Duo RX and break out the SG on special occasions then. :)

You need two power supplies when using the SCD with the SGx.  That's the only way.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

And the AC adaptor for SCD units is different again from the rest of PC Engine series... Had hard time to source the equivalent in 240VAC input...

I have both power supplies, but the SGX power supply doesn't really fit (it's too fat) once the Super CDROM 2 is overlaid on top of the port.

Oh wait, I'm stupid.  I had the Super CDROM2 PS plugged into the SGX and vice versa.

Now it works fine.

But is an unwieldy piece of kit, that's for sure!

cybersalad, I wonder if I was shadowing you in Tokyo since I just came back from there a few days ago myself. :)

I did notice a SCD system at SuperPotato (i think), but the next time I went there, it was gone.  I was eyeing it myself when I first saw it, but it looks like you beat me to it!  haha!

You didn't happen to buy a copy of Dracula X did you?  I saw one somewhere, maybe Trader2, but again, when I came back later on, that was gone too.

Hahah!

I indeed bought a copy of Dracula X--but I got it at Sofmap instead.  So did my friend.  They had 1 copy left.  Sofmap had a lot of good PCE stuff.

So it was YOU that bought that loose HUCARD of Strip Fighter II wasn't it!!!!  I think it was at Super Potato, and when I went back the next day to get it--it was gone!!!!!

So--all's fair! :)

Man--I got such a haul...both Spriggans, Dracula X, Gain Ground, Cho Akibi....everything I wanted pretty much.  Can't wait to go next year!

So you bought Gain Ground too!?!?  MAN! :)  I spent all day looking for that game.  I couldn't remember for the life of me where I saw it but eventually found a copy.  Didn't remember it being at that store, but at least I got it.

Hmm... I didn't see a copy of Strip Fighter II, but picked one up when I was there last year. hehehe.  But that means... there was another PCE guy lurking around snagging stuff before we could get it! hehe

I love going to Tokyo.  Although the selection of PCE stuff has been dwindling down lately, there's still a number of places to check out.  Too bad the "powerhouses" MediaLand and Trader2 reduced their retro offerings a lot.  I was disappointed in the small amount of PCE stuff they had compared to only last year when PCE occupied nearly an entire wall.

Maybe I'll do a little writeup on Akihabara here.  I took a number of pictures of the area.

Well, I got Gain Ground at "Friends", not Super Potato.  Which reminds me, I think someone also nabbed the copy of Godzilla Super Potato had.  Or maybe I saw it somewhere else.  I think that's the one game I wanted that I forgot to buy.

Granted--I'd prefer finding the English US release somehow.

This was my first time in Japan--and I was kind of curious about the surprisingly small PCE sections. So they're getting smaller, eh?  Seems like these used game stores are dominated by Dreamcast and Saturn stuff now.

Anyway--I took a lot of pictures too.  Maybe we can collaborate on that article or something.  A veteran and a newbie's perspective of Aki. :)

I used Kohler's "Power+Up" book's Aki shopping guide to get me around.  But he doesnt' really list the specific location of any of the shops.  So it was quite an adventure.  Something more comprehensive needs to be written.

Of course--if we do that, then the secret's out!!!

Friends is an awesome store.  The first time I went there I think they just opened (around 2003?) and I was just floored on how much stuff they had.  It was like walking back in time to a game store from the 80s/early 90s.

Unfortunately, even those sections have been reduced too.  Not as much as 8/16bit stuff, but not as prominent as they used to be.  I used to be able to find pretty much and DC/Sat game I wanted (there aren't many left that I want though), but this time, I couldn't even find DC Chaos Field.   I wasn't looking that hard though.

Yeah, that would be cool.  I wish I had a decent map of the area so I could use it on my webpage.

PM me (or maybe post a new topic) so we can discuss.  All I had in mind was to list the stores that carry PCE stuff and rate them as far as price/quality/variety.
