MUSHA is a great game, but not quite the greatest shooter ever made. Hell, it's not even the greatest Compile shooter.

I personally enjoy Blazing Lazers and Spriggan more.

I love Spriggan.  The weapon combos are so amazing.  I also like how Super Aleste/Space Megaforce used some of the weapons found in Blazing Lazers/Gunhed.  My favorite compile shooters go Spriggan, Blazing Lazers/Gunhed, ZanacXZanac, MUSHA Aleste, Super Aleste/Space Megaforce

Spriggan is great indeed, but kinda easy.  Aleste 2 on "crazy mode" takes insane skill to even survive the stage 1 mid-point boss.

No idea, but I'd assume the LD version would have the better quality video,
which is the whole point really.
