some dislike the slow/dumbed down SNES version of Gradius III.  Compared to the 'cade original it's pretty simple.

I still really enjoy Gradius III tho.

Yeah, still pretty enjoyable. I don't see how slowdown can ruin the whole game. It helps in some instances.

Yeah, it definitely makes it easier to get through Gradius III.

Anyway, my vote goes to Space Megaforce

NO love for flying hero. That game is pretty damn sweet for a cute em up. I definitely prefer it over Popn twinbee.

But there are some parts that remind me of Star Parodiar. Both came the same year...so don't know who to  accuse.

I haven't played a lot of the SFC/SNES shooters since I really wasn't into the genre when the system was current, but my favorite is Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings. I also have a soft spot in my heart for Super R-Type, crippling slowdown and all. Honestly, I think it's the music, it is fantastic.

I played Gradius 3 SNES for the first time ever today, and I kinda wish it wasn't released on this platform, or released later when programmers were better. It's a fantastic game, to be sure, but the slowdown is just constant if you are fully powered up. I wish it had been a Super/Arcade CD instead.

Konami seemed to have a real problem with slowdown, regardless of what platform they were programming for.

Honestly I think Super R-Type has one of the most horrible and generic BGM of all SFC games.
But that counts for many other games on that system as well. Most musics on it have aged sooo badly.

Its not that Gradius is bad, its that the SNES game is boring and slow and non-descript and also slow.

Did I mention its slow?

I couldn't disagree with you more here, Tats. :)  I adore the SNES soundchip. Especially with the 1st generation releases like F-Zero and Pilotwings. Hearing the tune on the "Records" screen in F-Zero brings back the warm and fuzzies of friday nights after a ballgame with a friend staying the night so we could stay up "late" and game. ...such good times.

My favorite is Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie. The sound is pretty great too.

Stage 3 is ubergeil :)

one of may favs on the system.

Its been a while since I played the game and I actually forgot how amazing that stage music is. That monosynth lead is incredible!

If I had one complaint about this game it would be the horrible box art which is...horrible. PC Engine definitely won that battle...twice even.

Yeah, I like the F-Zero stuff as well, especially Mute City is one of my favs ever. But unfortunatelly not everyone was on that same level and many games just have blunt and dull musics today. For me Super R-Type is one of 'em, using such generic sounds like ochestral chords and stuff, just turns me very off.
But sure there are others like Konami f.e. which did everything right most of the time. Axelay, Gradius, Akumajou dracula, the Goemon serie etc. is just splendid stuff.

Developers should have taken lessons from Compile. I still can't believe how much shit there is on screen in SMF with very little to no slowdown.
