Good 1X CD Burner
« on: September 22, 2005, 01:13:56 PM »
Anyone know a good 1X CD Writer to buy and where?
This will ensure no burn problems since my DVD Burners only go minimum 8X  :(
Thanks!

The old plextor (forgot what model) cdrw burners are good and reliable, but they're hard to find especially a 1x speed. An alternative are the older HP cd-writer. Those are frequent on ebay and cheap too. The problem with the older HP cd-writer is many of them lack important features such as over-burn, burn-proof, or SAO.

A friend of mine has an old Memorex he can give me that will burn at 1x...those any good?
I used to have a Memorex Cd Reader and it was crap...errors all the time...
He also may have a Plextor...but he is not sure and not sure on the speeds either.
No whe laso has my old HP writer...but if it won't do the overburn, SAO, or burn proof, that won't work either.

Never used a Memorex so I can't give an opinion. However, I did manage to track down the Plextor model I used to own. It was a Plextor PX-W1610TA, this was the best cdrw I've ever used. I regret selling it.

This model is even better.

Get the TDK VeloCd writer I told you about a little while ago. Cheap and very reliable. The one I have in my 1ghz Pentium 3 with Win98 is the 8x/4x/32x model. I had it for 5 years and it is awesome for slow reliable burns. Too bad the really good dark blue TDK discs aren't made anymore. These were the best discs you could use on non cd-r reading players. I swear the companies are making it more impossible to copy things to run on older stuff these days.

Burning discs at 1X doesn't necessarily mean they will work that much better on a PCE or Duo, just worth noting. Though the lower the speed the better the copy should be, things like the media and the laser of whatever you will be playing it back on are far more important than the type of burner you use. Check used computers shows, a lot of times old CD burners can be found there dirt cheap, I still have a 6X4X32 in use that's capable of burning at 1X, there's a lot of them out there.

I know E-bay can be anoying but heres a good high feedback seller in the US. This used model will burn at 1X easily its a 12X/10X/32X. $10 so far and it will most likely sell at that price, at most it would go to $25.

There are some new ones on E-bay like the 24X/16X/48X models for $20, I am pretty sure they burn at 1X also.

Just look up TDK's website if they still have info, or google info on it. I am sure it will tell you if it doesn't. When I got my TDK it was in 1999 and they kept making them around the same until 2001. Just had slightly faster speeds. I will look at my drivers and stuff for my TDK to see.

Got a question tho, is there any burners you can buy now at NewEgg that will burn at 1X or 2X for Turbo CD games???
I have an account there and would just as well get it there over EBay...
Thanks!

I am not sure. Your best bet is to get a CD-Burner made after Windows XP and before the year 2002. So I guess look for a burner that was released in 2001 pretty much. TDK, Plextor, Yamaha make good burners. Just don't get a cheap generic one and you should be fine. Really most CD-R only burners support 1x burn, its the DVD/CD-R hybrid burners that don't burn at slower speeds.

Samsung does a great new burner that does 2x fine.I have tested this with many Super Cd  games with no problems. It even copied the infamiously uncopiable Cosmic Fantasy 2.Othe rthen that, and Plextor does well at 2 x also.
