Best TV to play older games on?
« on: November 10, 2011, 07:35:07 AM »
So i'm making this topic because of my current living setup is small and i need the most bang for my buck. Anyway I'm looking for a TV to play my older games on (pce, saturn,SNES ect) Currently I'm playing them on a 46" vizio HD tv, which is not preferred. i also have a asus 22" monitor which i used when i play fighting games on my ps3 because it has almost no lag ( i think its .5 frames of delay, compared to my vizio having like 2-4 frames of delay) This issue with the Asus, is that it doesn't have AV ports, or RF ports, and so on, so i can't play my older games on it. I know i can buy a HDMI converter, but i'm not to sure if that would be better than just buying a CRT. I do own a CRT right now, but its 32" and i don't have room for it in my game setup. I know i have seen some of you guys with some Sony CRT that look like the ones you use to connect cameras up to them, but I don't know anything about those.

Any advise is greatly appreciated

Go for around a 30-36 inch CRT made in the late 90s or early 2000s. I personally have a Toshiba 30 inch CRT 1080i HDTV, but others may have their own suggestions. Also what country you're in matters, in Japan RGB SCART as a hookup was fairly common while in Europe they had another RGB connection. In the US your best video connection on a CRT is going to be HDMI or Component, so you want a CRT that has a high quality video connection as well.

I recommend stuff from Sony and JVC, late 90s, early 2000s.

The problem with going with something small though is that they lack the superior inputs and input hardware that is reserved for the higher end models. They aren't just smaller, they are inferior in other ways as well.

Hell, anything is better than a Vizio LCD though.

if you want to go a bit smaller look for a sanyo from the 90's
preferably 25" or bigger, however in the 90's good tv's were available down to 19".
note if your game systems support any high end connections (RGB, component, S-Video, Ect), look for compatability.
the reason i say sanyo, is they produced the most stable conventional picture tubes.
the sony tubes were verry solid, but unconventional (also a solid choice)

Back in the day I had used to have a 22" Sony Trinitron CRT TV set that was great in RGB and highly recommended.

If you are looking at an old set I would make sure that it supports the formation you need (RGB/NTSC etc)

I have a 36" Sony Trinitron (weighs twice what my 52" Samsung LCD does, I hate moving the thing...), and it is great!  Got it for $50 on Craigslist and it is the best SD TV I ever had.  People basically are giving these things away, I saw more than a few since on my local craigslist, so you will surely be able to get one on the cheap.

I second's Zeta's recommendation... I have a 29" (or is it 30"?) JVC from, like, 2003 or 2002 or something that has simply one of the best picture's I've seen on a CRT. Even over composite, the Duo looks really sharp.

I've got a 27" JVC that I bought new around '98 and it still runs like a champ! It's what I run all my 8 and 16 bit systems through (via a couple 4-button RCA switch boxes daisy-chained together).

I used to have a Sony WEGA 36" TV and it was pretty boss (had a ton of inputs and an awesome 16x9 mode for playing DVDs) but I got tired of moving it every time we moved so I gave it away to a friend.  It weighed 218lbs!

I wouldn't mind hunting down a 27" or 32" Sony WEGA one of these days though.

i actually set up my (i think its) 30" that i had laying in the corner in my bedroom. it actually fits pretty good. i just moved my asus off to the side of the stand, and when i need to use the asus i have enough room to place it in front of the CRT. ill take a picture and post the setup tomorrow

I didn't want a huge TV where I have my game consoles, so I own a 14" Toshiba flatscreen SDTV.  It has composite, s-video, and component connecdtions.  There are 4 composite connections on the thing.  The picture for the size is truely amazing.  The colors are perfect!  It's nice and small and works great rotated as well.  I opted for a small TV so I wouldn't have any issues playing vertical shooters.  If you want the perfect picture I'd go with a PVM like Ope mentioned.  Not the best looking cosmetically, but you will not find a better picture than on a PVM.  Only problem is trying to track one down.  Ope seems to never have a problem though. :-k

Check Goodwills, best possible place to find CRT TVs dirt cheap and you can usually test them.

I have a 27 inch Song Wega and a 19 inch panasonic (both CRT's). Honestly, I like the Panasonic better because its sharper. I just situate it closer so its not to far away.
