I've heard many individuals on here mention using rechargable alkaline in their Expresses. Enerloop (is that right?) seems to be rather popular. I have 12 Energizer rechargables I use with mine. Nobody has mentioned the system going nuclear from it, so I'd wager you'd be fine. Just don't try to charge them inside the system. That's a big no no.
I use Duracell 1 hour NIMHs in my Wii controllers, since if they go dead I can have them back at full in 1 hour. They work great.

NIMH batteries tend to last longer in electronics than alkalines do, though they don't store well at all. Don't put rechargeables in your remotes, but do use them in high-drain items.
