I have come across a Turbo DUO that will read CD-Rs perfect but only with the entire top of the DUO off. Put the top back on and it will only read regular games. I am not necessarily posting this to find a fix. I am just wondering why this is.

I seen a video on YouTube recently that was just like that.  But it wasnt the entire top, just the plastic that covers the laser sled.  With it on, it wouldn't boot a CDr, take it off, and it played it fine.  Strange.

That plastic cover is the most finicky part in a Duo. If you so much as look at it wrong it will rub on your discs. If you try to put a disassembled Duo back together, that sled requires four attempts to remount correctly. I'd wager that it exerts enough pressure on the lens mechanism itself to effect the playing disObeying of CD-R's.

It's not the plastic part that goes over the lens that is doing it. I can take that part off and put the system back together and yet no CDr function. It's the difference between night and day. It is freaky weird. I wonder if it has something to do with light getting in there.

Meteor Blaster DX is a fancy made CD-R isn't it? Has anyone had issues with it? I know I had a Duo that the game would cause the laser to stick at the end of the sled track. A friend had one that had zero issues with it. If I have a itch to play the game, which is rare, I just mednafen or magicengine it, so no biggy...

My TurboDuo won't play MBDX or any other CDR I've tried in it.

I have issues with my Turbo CD not wanting to play MBDX, but played others I have tried. I'll have to break out my current Duo and give it a try...

Yep. It jammed the lens in my August 92 U.S. Duo. I pushed it back and that was the end of my lens! Audio cut out and games wouldn't load. Had to install a new lens. Tried Meteor Blaster again with the new lens and it jammed again. IIRC, I tried another one of my decks too and that didn't work.  So now I have a customized game with my name on the title screen and I can't play it.

It is not really worth, it. It is just wasting CD-R's. Ever single image is out there on the net, just as with any other videogame system, and arcade unit. Also the PCE CD can get damaged in the CD drive, that has probably sampled many things. I wouldn't put a PCE game threw that trauma.

little late on this one, but i think this info may helpful, also there may be an opinion in there.

backing up your own disc is great, as you can make sure that it actually works! alcohol 120 works amazingly, and nero ain't bad either but requires a little adjustment to get the perfect burn.

i have bad luck with the standard 700mb CD-Rs, so i use these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00065DGGY/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=

burning as slow as possible is a silly myth, our fancy new drives are not made for that. writing data at a constant speed is most important. a good rule of thumb for me has been half of my fastest available speed. no coasters as long as the image is good.

if you have the option, burn ISO 96 (nero 10), otherwise disc at once (like in imgburn). if you are just copying the disc, your cd writing software should take care of it

hope this helpful to someone

Funny you should say that, it killed one of my duo of duos. Luckily it was an easy fix, but I won't be playing that game on my true hardware again.
