US TurboGrafx boxed question..
« on: December 21, 2011, 04:45:54 AM »
Hello all,

Did all US TG-16 / CD releases come with boxes or did they come with cases sealed? Im sure all the early releases came with the regular looking boxes but did they change over to just sealing cases at the end of its life?

Thanks,
D

Many of the later CD/SCD releases did not have a box. I think all hu's came with a box.

Actually I lied, Keith Courage did not have a box but I don't think it was ever for sale independent of the system.

All hueys except the aforementioned Keith Courage and the two system cards came boxed; all CD-ROM2 games came boxed, excepting Buster Bros., Splash Lake, Vasteel (came in a paperboard sleeve similar to the SGX games), Sherlock Holmes 2, and Syd Mead's Terraforming (the latter two labeled as Super CD-ROM2 but not); and all Super CD-ROM2 titles were unboxed, though Exile: Wicked Phenomenon had a sleeve akin to Vasteel's.

I believe that the epic beach Hawaii girl games came in sealed (slim?) jewel cases.

The Turbo CD System card came with no jewel case or independant manual, but the Super CD System card came in a PC Engine style jewel case with an insert and fold out manual.

All standard CD games came with boxes except Splash Lake, Buster Bros, and the 3 Hawaiian CD's.  Super CD games did not come in boxes.  However, Vasteel, Exile 2 and maybe some other Working Design games came with a soft insert or slip similar to the Supergrafx games.

All of the hucards had boxes.  The last batch of 20 or so hucards released did not have plastic jewel cases
The following games did not come with cases.

Air Zonk
Bomberman 93
Bonk 3 hucard
Chase HQ
Darkwing Duck
Dead Moon
Falcon
Ghost Manor
Hit the Ice
Jackie Chan
Legend Hero Tonma
Magical Chase
Neutopia 2
New Adventure Island
Order of the Griffon
Samuria Ghost
Shockman
Soldier Blade
Somer Assault
Time Cruise
World Sports Competition

Here's a slightly more obscure question ... did all of the HuCard plastic cases have black and orange spines?
The sequel to Splatter House should be called Circle Jerk.

No, that was only early releases.

oh blah, duh! Looking at some of my cases right now. But all those early ones that were uniform, were any of them not orange and black? I mean like before they started  doing black spines with blue and other colored tips.

Side Arms is unique. Cadash and Parasol Stars probably are too.

All of the Working Designs CD game cases are unique.

Cadash and Parasol Stars have the standard black-with-colored-tabs design. They do have artwork on the actual card itself, which is definitely a WD thing.

Hmm, I thought Klax was funky too, but it has a black + color tab as well. The only thing weird about it is the art on the chip which was unusual for the era (and I think I read it isn't region locked though I've never verified this). I just looked through my games and the only weird one as far as spines on US releases is Side Arms.

As far as CD games go, it looks like there's a bit more variation. There's Fighting Street and Monster Lair which are yellow, a bunch that have the black + color tab, some that are all black (Working Designs), then the later releases that are white + color tab.

On the PC Engine side there seems to be more variation, but that may just be the games I've got.

I knew about all of those except sidearms and klax (cause I never owned them). Mostly I was curious if there were any weird chip spines BEFORE they broke away from the orange/black uniformity. But then I never had just a TG-16. Didn't get into the scene until Xmas 92 when I got my Duo, so I'm not really knowledgeable on the pre-Duo years.

I thought about getting all 145 of them once upon a time, but then I'd have to have really bad ones in my collection like golf and football and baseball and soccer ... I just couldn't bring myself to have a football game on my shelf ... no even for Duo.

My Fighting Street and Monster Lair spines are Lime-Green. Yellow is suposed to represent RPG's.

I've recently been collecting pics from around the web to see just exactly how many of the cases were done with the classic orange and black labels so I can make a list of them.

The orange and black brings back a lot of the nostalgia for me.
