Looks like I'm gonna be waiting for hark's video, as another hour of gaming last night accomplished jack squat.  I went to each town and talked to everyone twice (day/night), yet nothing.

Yep.  I raided all the treasure chests and made my way back to the locked door.  Is there an event item in there that I missed?

I don't think so but I went there twice and the second time, some text was displayed when I "talked" to some barrels. Nothing else happened so I left the cave and when I did a girl with green? hair standing outside the cave said something and ran off real quick. I haven't received any event items yet though.

Well, I guess I'll try searching the barrels again.  I did the first two times through the cave and got the same message at each barrel, but no girl; maybe it'll be different this time.  Thanks!

I'm sort of equally frustrated here. Really wish there was a detailed walkthrough that would at least shed some light on what's going on story-wise.

IIRC when the event involving the barrels happens, it happens as soon as you walk into the room. No needs to search every barrel every time. Feel free to do so though, of course.
