Get ready for lots of fetch questing. You'll be running back and forth across these maps, top to bottom, talking to people, going back, re-talking to them, etc, in order to trigger events.

Xanadu is a fantastic game, but only the hardiest of the hardy will make it through to the end.

Quoted for truth.

Do you remember the walkthrough at was incredibly vague that existed on the internets back in 2008? I've been having a heck of a time finding it for a few people who are getting stuck.

Haha, yeah, that walkthrough was something else. It was like the guy played through the game, and then a year later wrote the walkthrough based on memory.

_________

PROTIP: The night/day cycle makes a big difference in this game, and also is a big part of the difficulty. Some events will only trigger at night, some characters will only show up in certain places at night, etc.

That said, I don't remember the game pulling such shenanigans this early in the adventure (although I could be wrong). I recall making it to the 2nd or 3rd area before having to consult a walkthrough.

Heh, well, looks like I'm in for a rough ride. :D I've scouted that cave, looted it for all it's junk, returned to town and talked to every one again. There's still the one lady in the town that refuses to talk to me, and the one guy in the mountains that's not interested in talking to me either. I have no blob buddy, but my guy is pretty powerful.

Any advice on where to go from here? Where's the blob buddy at? How do I get the villagers to go to the cave? Thanks!

ALSO, let me echo what Regal and Zeta said. I played for maybe an hour the other night, "saved" and lost that progress. Tonight I cleared out my backup memory before playing and saving actually works now.

LOL EXACTLY. Like it was some distant memory. It started out pretty in-depth... with a ASCII b/w picture and then it got progressively weirder and more vague with phrases like "I cant remember what you have to do here, something about the yeti's.." Like he had been eating brownies at a reggae festival. Although still I wish I had saved a copy of it for subsequent runthroughs.

The sheer adrenaline of trying to beat Xanadu overshadowed the need to document the process of the game. The resulting In hindsight, that really sucks, because I probably would sound just as loaded and detached in my effort to go through the game.

BTW, Zeta, once you get the slime-dude you have to wait until the eventing in the town in Map 1 to trigger the event that opens up the cave. I'm not sure if they celebrate you as a god or kick you out of town because you're (Arios) are an outsider. You will pick up Lykos (Ryukos) on Map 2.

I can't offer any specific advice, but my experience, from what I remember, was similar to nat's. The first map is very tiny and straightforward and I zipped through without any help. I'm guessing that what you need to do to get into the boss zone is more obvious than it seems.

I'm pretty sure that you pick up the blob friend around the canyons in the North, possibly at the very top or along the outer rim? I'm pretty sure that you just come across it and then it's following you.

I honestly can't remember where I got the blob. I've been wandering around for two nights now achieving nothing. I still need a key to get into the boss room.

People in the town will sometimes mention the slime, but no event. He follows me everywhere on the map and occasionally attacks other slimes. For whatever reason he doesn't follow me into the cave though.

Still can't get into that one girls house, or the house in the woods.

Ok, after my eighth run through of talking to every single person I've made some progress.

The guy in the woods won't let you in until you've talked to Melina. Melina won't let you in until you have a little event at the south part of the southern most town. For that to happen you need the slime. It wasnt actually night when this happened, but it was late in the day.

Sorry, I can't remember where I got the slime.

Had a long talk with the guy in the cabin.  He gave me a book or something (my first event item) so I suppose I just need to talk to every single person in the game 11 more times to eventually make that into a key.

I love the "leveling" process in this game. Watching that experience meter grow as you gleefully plow through waves upon waves of sword fodder is a pleasure unto itself.

It is, but I spent way too much time doing this and now I'm to the point where enemies can't damage me and I can kill them in one hit yet I'm still not really anywhere in the game. :D I'd advise new players not to spend a huge amount of time saving up gold to buy the most expense stuff and leveling up their armor/sword/shield at first. Just go to that cave, all the good sword/armor/shield in the first area is available in there for free. :D

Yeah, this was stated from multiple sources multiple times during the voting process and still Xanadu 1 came out ahead. I sure didn't vote for it as I hate setting myself up for failure. I can't quite figure out why people voted for it...

We should've only counted the votes from people that could be bothered to post, meaning Xanadu only got two votes.  Ah well, I'm gonna start this sucka up tonight and see if I can catch up to you guys.

ROFL

There were two or three times when I maxxed out the gold (at 999,999) and asked myself "Holy shit, what can I buy with this much gold.?"

Sorry, I can't remember where I got the slime.

Top of the first map, in a wooded area.

Argh, I'm late to the party here. I'm just firing this up now. Is everyone hanging in there alright? Sounds like we've had some issues. Voice up if you think this game isn't going to work well - this is all trial and error, so no use in torturing ourselves. This is supposed to be a fun experience here!
