I do not know Japanese, and trying to get the game in english is proving to be difficult.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Probably, it's about as basic as RPGs come (dungeon, town, dungeon, town, etc).  Plus you could most likely easily find a walkthrough for it in english even if you get stuck.

Don't bother with #2 though, that one has WAY too much backtracking and shit, you can never tell where you're supposed to go.

Personally, I love Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes. It's a bit basic as GUTS said, but it's a little unique because it's like a traditional style 8-bit RPG, only with some new twists. The thing that keeps me coming back to this game is that it has a fun, simple story that just makes it fun to play through, making it a fun adventure that's just a little epic. There are only three cinemas during the whole game, but they are fantastic and the ending is wonderful if you ask me. The soundtrack is just decent for the most part, but there are some really outstanding tunes in the entire soundtrack, mainly towards the end of the game (My favorite being the ending/credits song, which I think is called "The Wind's Monologue"). I should also mention that this game is just midly hard; the bosses are typically going to take multiple tries to destroy and they are actually pretty fun if you are into turn-based battles. If you want a RPG that is a bit simplitic, yet a fun adventure, this is the game.

If you really want to play this game, I highly suggest skipping the PC Engine version and going straight for the Turbo CD/Duo version because it would be very hard completing the game without knowing Japanese since there aren't always cinemas explaining what's going on and reading will highly be required to understand where to go and to enjoy the story.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

It's really worth getting the game in English. Playing in Japanese would just be boring as the scenery doesn't exactly change much. The English language version has appaling voice acting, but you really need to know what's going on to enjoy it.

The voice acting in the English version will be a major let down if you enjoy your RPGs to have talented voice acting, like Ys Book I & II. However the voice acting is so hilarious that a person like me cannot miss it! Some of the cheesiest voice acting  I have ever heard! Also in the English verison, there are lots of references in the game referring to various popular things, such as the band The Beatles, the band The Who (my favorite!), and the cartoon series the Flintstones! It's fun to catch if you are into those things. (I was especially into a doctor have the name "Doctor Jimmy", as in the badass song by The Who :D ).
