i love driving games, but all of the ones i've played on the Turbo are very primitive (Victory run, Final Lap Twin, Motoroader 2...)
how are the ports of Outrun and Chase HQ?  did they make any good imports?   any originals?

I have to say the Chase HQ port is very good.  It's not 100% like the arcade, but pretty fun in it's own right.  I'd recommend it.

cool, i've been a little gun-shy about giving that a try after playing the atrocious SNES version.
has anyone compared the two?

Chase HQ is great, but I enjoy the sequel on PCE even more called "SCI"  because the controls are a lot easier and you can actually have a guy come out of the top of your car and shoot down cars. Chase HQ = Great, SCI = Even better!

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Outrun is a pretty solid conversion. The graphics are colourful and vivid, the sound is solid and the gameplay is good. It's an as decent conversion like Afterburner 2. The team at NEC Avenue who did the Sega conversions during this time back then, was talented.
I always wanted to buy Chase HQ or SCI because I remember them from the C64 and SCI was a nice game back then.

outrun would be the best on that system! also amazing, especially for its age, is victory run since the speed feeling is just fantastic, and it was one of the release titles in '87. S.C.I also makes some fun ofcoz!

Victory Run is indeed pretty respectable.  I always felt this game had a lot of potential - I only wish I didn't suck so much at it :)

I was playing a little bit of Outrun and Chase HQ a little earlier today.  The Outrun conversion is nearly perfect. If you like arcade Outrun, you'll like the port. I never tire of this game.

Chase HQ...well, it's a great conversion of the arcade as well.  I used to spend a ton of money in the arcades pumping quarters into this, but I honestly dont' find the game that interesting anymore.  I still play it and have fun from time to time, but it has aged.  I haven't played SCI, I'll have to give it a try sometime.

To be honest though, Outrun is one of the few 2d racing games that I still like in this day and age.  The only other ones I can think of that I still like are Pole Position, Road Blasters, and Hang-On.  These are on the PCE though...

One of the virtues of Victory Run, which I have trumpeted here often (so forgive the redundancy) is that there is a really nice balance between racing and strategy in VR. The strategy derives from the management of parts, primarily, but also from figuring out the best way to handle the different terrains (savannah, bumpy desert, etc.). I really like the parts management aspect, even though it can be quite frustrating to lose a race due to your inventory of parts (instead of bad driving).

Power Drift is underrated. Sure it's jerky and awkward to control, but if you get into it and have a really good run, you feel like you've accomplished something.

totally forgot about that, yes!! power drift was excellent too at its time. the best home conversion at that time so far (compared to the amiga, st, c64 and the other homecomputer conv.).

I enjoyed the PCE Power Drift quite a bit. It's not really like the arcade one at all but it's still a solid old-skool racer on it's own. :)
