GoT is must own. There's tons of variety within each level, and each level is quite different from eachother. Tunes are badass. Controls great, you never feel the game is being unfair, tho there are some tough spots later on. I think I made it to the 4th level on my first run, which was like 15 years ago lol

Get it.
Nothin beats the real thing.

R-Type:  slow and clunky, awful restart points.

I appreciate what it did in a historical sense, but I never really want to play it.

You won't be disappointed.  In the immortal words of spida1a, it's   I like it more than Lords of Thunder, but they are both exceptional games.  Of the shooties you listed, I'd say it's up there with Soldier Blade.  Certainly more eye candy - it really shows off what a SCD is capable of.

I think the point is to make it too frustrating to die so you have to learn the levels to play a perfect game. Most Irem games are like that, you need to learn the levels and master the controls.

Gate of Thunder is not only tied at the top as one of the best shooters on the system, it is also quite accessible. It has a fantastic challenge curve. The first level is pretty easy, but each subsequent level and boss gets progressively harder until you get to the last level and are barely hanging on, yet it is never cheap. There are no dead-ends where you simply took the wrong path.

For folks who are not natural shooter fans but do like a few of them, this is probably the safest and best recommendation.

If you own any shooters at all, you should own this one.

GoT is also my favorite shooter on the pc-e.  It's not as flashy as Lords of Thunder, but the game as a whole is far better.  Better gameplay and one of the most amazing soundtracks to grace a cd ever!  Spriggan is the only shooter that comes close to GoT.

As others have said, the game is f*cking great. One of the best shooters ever, my favorite on PCE. Most American Duo fans have this since it came free with the system.

While there are other shooters that are more fantastic in specific ways, Ikaruga, Pulstar, ESPRaDe, I think GOT is the best "all around" shooter ever. The music is great, the sound effects amazing, no load times, perfect difficulty, great ending.

GoT is one of those shmups that truly becomes great when you can play it on hard or devil difficulty. Since I've played it soo much since the release as a packin in Oct '92, it's kind of boring to play on normal difficulty. And I'm not a hardcore shooter/shmup gamer either. I usually play them on just the default difficulty settings.

GoT holds my attention because there are so many ways to control the ship, between aiming the guns, shifting speed, and changing weapons.  Furthermore, the game is actually designed with these options in mind; making some rapid changes at the right time can really make things at lot easier.  For example, I change speed way more often in GoT than the Soldier games.

£22/$35 shipped for the PCE version seems a little high.  If you're spending that kind of money I would have bought that U.S. version w/o manual for $40 (shipped)  to get the extra games.
