Hyperion counts, it's a SegaCD game just recorded on a LD.

I have to vote for Bari Arm.  It's the best playing shooter and has an amazing sound track.  The others arealso great and I love Silpheed, but overall it's Bari Arm for me.

OK, but is it a shooter? If we include that, don't we have to include all the other borderliners? Soul Star? Afterburner III? Microcosm? Sewer Shark? It seems like the focus is just traditional 2D shooters.

?? Hyperion give you a behind the ship viewpoint, but it's a sprite that you move wherever you want to.  It's not like Sewer Shark at all...
It's basically Sylpheed with textures...

It's a pretty big leap to go from 2D scrolling shooters to pseudo-3D chase-view shooters. The point about Sewer Shark is that like Hyperion, it's outside the normal scope of the genre. Does anybody ever bring up Space Harrier when they talk about shmups? I don't think they would even let you post a high-score thread for it at shmups.com.

Silpheed is admittedly also kind of a borderliner, but the gameplay itself takes place almost entirely on a 2D plane. I'd say it qualifies as a gimmicky vertical shmup.

I think Silpheed is more visually appealing than Hyperion.  At least I can play Silpheed without shitty bleeding colors.  The tape they used to master the LaserDisc must have been VHS.  There was no quality control in regards to LaserActive video.  Vajra is one of the worst.  Like VHS recorded in EP mode dubbed down a few generations.

You know, I actually love a good chase-view shooter. My fondness of Panorama Cotton speaks for itself, and I've also spent loads of time with Space Harrier and good time with Galaxy Force II. Not to mention stuff like Panzer Dragoon Zwei.

How is Hyperion? The visuals look nice, but how about the gameplay? Does the ship maneuver and fire well? Are the enemies very stimulating? Does it have exciting pacing?

Same here  :D
But closely followed by Silpheed because I've got Game Arts love.

On the topic of FMV games though, I think that Ground Zero Texas is probably one of the best FMV games for the Sega CD.  It's actually fun to play and watch, the story doesn't suck balls, and the video encoding isn't too bad.  I'm also assuming we're only talking about western stuff though because there was no mention of Time Gal or Road Prosecutor/Blaster.

What I really wan to know is what the best FMV game for sega cd was. For me it's a tie between Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch or Kriss Kross Make My Video

If you want an honest answer, Prize Fighter.

Yeah, Prize Fighter. Also, that kung fu game that is much like Prize Fighter is pretty solid.

Aesthetically, Time Gal and Road Buster.

I have some stuff to say about this, but as I was writing it up it got so big I decided to put it in The Official Pioneer LaserActive Player Thread

No Sol-Feace? Not saying it's the best, but it's a solid shooter that a lot of people who bought the SEGA CD played since it game with the system at one point.

I would actually vote Sol-Feace for being my personal favorite, but maybe not the "BEST". It just has a Turbo feel to it, know what I mean?  speaking of that- I just realized I have two copies!! Anyone want my dupe?

If nobody is going to take you up on your offer, than, yes, I would gladly take your dupe of Sol-Feace .

I owned Sol-Deace (cart) at one point, but I must have given it away. And I played (but never owned) Sol-Feace back in the day, when Sega-CD was exciting and new. It's actually depressing to think about how long ago that was .
