Games that support 3- and 6- button pads! Help!
« on: October 31, 2005, 05:50:18 AM »
Hi folks, an old thread has been resurrected at magicengine.com forums:
http://www.magicenginefx.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1082&highlight=

BUT, you can continue the discussion here (since you might not be registered there, nor want to register).

HELP NEEDED: First, we need the existing games on the list to be confirmed.

For example, there are a bunch of VS. Fighting games that are listed as "6-button" in pcecp.com, but they haven't been verified yet. Also, there are some games that will suprise you  (i.e. Ys IV) and hopefully we'll find a few more.

Second, as far as "3-button" controllers go, Kaminari pointed out that the third button is simply a re-mapped SELECT or RUN button... so any game that uses SELECT or RUN in the gameplay might benefit from a 3-button controller.

For example: I've only used my 3-button with Forgotten Worlds, but when considering additional games that might benefit from a new controller layout, Bloody Wolf and Blazing Lazers were two titles that immediately came to mind. Has anyone tried this?

In general, what games use SELECT and / or RUN during gameplay?

Yeah, I remember you doing that! Very kool. I think we should merge our projects and make a really nice M128, Mouse, 3- , 6- button mini-FAQ.

Now all we need is for folks who have played these games to verify these lists... and to provide details on how the layout worked (i.e. World Heroes really doesn't do much, it's pretty lame, yet it is categorized as 6-button compatible -- that's great info that folks will want to know, but can't obtain elsewhere).

I had a chance to get a PCE mouse as a freebie ages ago and I didn't. Now I wish I did!

yes, i remember a PCE mouse going on ebay recently for like $10-15.  wish i picked it up.

it would be nice to do that list and have it on a website rather than spread on on several forum threads.

i have Magicoal, Brandish, Ys 4 and all of the ACD fighting games except for the wrestling ones.

i'm having some problems with my M128.  anyone else have experience with one?

The list of mouse-compatible games is rather short:

1552: Tenka Dairan
A-Ressha de Ikkō 3
Brandish
Dennō Tenshi
Dōkyūsei
Eikan wa Kimi ni
Hatsukoi Monogatari
Jamanoid
Jantei Monogatari 3: Saver Angels
Lemmings
Metal Angel *
Metal Angel 2 *
Nemurenu Yoru no Chiisana Ohanashi
Power Golf 2: Golfer
Princess Maker 2
The Atlas: Renaissance Voyager
Tokimeki Memorial
Vasteel 2 *

(* to be confirmed)

I have a (probably) non exhaustive list for MB128-compatible games, including those few Kōei games that used the Save-kun back-up device. I never could figure out whether the Save-kun was a competing product or a redesigned Memory Base, but the fact is they were released at the same time and the same price. Any information is welcome :)

[Edit] I just got it from a Japanese source that the Save-kun is an MB128 clone.

Aoki Ōkami to Shiroki Mejika [Save-kun]
A-Ressha de Ikkō 3
Brandish
Eikan wa Kimi ni
Emerald Dragon
Fire Pro Joshi Dōmu Chōjo Taisen: Zenjo vs JWP
Linda³
Magicoal
Nobunaga no Yabō: Budō Fūun Roku [Save-kun]
Nobunaga no Yabō: Zenkoku Ban [Save-kun]
Popful Mail
Princess Maker 2
Private Eye Dol
San Gokushi 3 [Save-kun]
Shin Megami Tensei
Super Real Mahjong P2-3 Custom
Super Real Mahjong P5 Custom
Tadaima Yūsha Boshūchū
The Atlas: Renaissance Voyager
Vasteel 2

Vestcoat, what problem do you have with your MB128?

Vasteel 2 is mouse compatible, played with it before.  In fact it's Memory Base 128, Arcade Card compatible as well... It goes through an interesting diagnostic check at the start of the game...

Although all it does with the Memory Base is manage the MB128's memory and the system memory allowing you to swap things around.  I don't think it can access the MB128 for save game information directly.

Thank you. If you discover anything else about how MB128 interacts with Vasteel 2, be sure to tell us!

Excellent! We are well on our way to demystifying the PC Engine Mouse, MB128, etc.  :)

Also, Eikan Wa Kimini is the name of the simulation baeball game that I could never figure out the title to! I had seen it in a PCE magazine and couldn't find it ever again. As I was checking the titles on your list, I was relieved to find it (a search for *simulation* games doesn't list Eikan, neither does *sports* ... )

on Magicoal, i can't load games with the MB128.  I can save them.  but when i enter the title screen, goto Load Data and try to bring up a file, the screen goes black and the game never loads.
it works fine with Brandish, so i don't know what's wrong.

btw, does anyone know if there is a walkthrough somewhere for Magicoal?

i finally checked out Ys 4 with the 6 button pad.
here's what it does:
#lll  Inventory screen
#lV Equipment Menu
#V  Save menu
#Vl  Load menu

i can also verify Kabuki fighters.  the top 3 buttons are your weak, medium and strong punch attacks and the lower 3 buttons do the same thing for your kick attacks.

Noted and updated!  Assuming that Kabuki Fighters = Kabuki Itouryodan, that is.
