Random local market had this figure
« on: March 31, 2012, 10:41:14 AM »
Who knew that Wataru was still popular somewhere? Never really was too well known in the U.S. in spite of Keith Courage.

Edit: Trying again with the images:

How on earth does your camera managed to make everything so chunky and pixelated?

Wateru, oh that RPG, in a RPG spoof that is not slayers. Well the last time I heard about Wateru was back when we still had things called malls. A man setup a small shop area, selling imported animation, and videogames. Had a sign detailing his venture to Japan. Mentioned the people their kept calling him Wateru ( which he did look like ), he was selling devil lady, and a couple non-hentai stuff.

The next place I heard of him, was in Megaman Legends where you have the option of the junk shop keeper calling you "Wateru" or something else. I think his name also appears as a joke in a couple of other games as well. I think in Mystical Ninja N64.

Wataru was pretty popular back in the day. There were some new Wataru things made in the last year or two, I think. This might be one of them but I can't quite tell since it is literally the lowest quality picture in the history of the internet. Evidently its a 1936x2592 blown up from something 90x90.

I didn't buy it yet. It's not a high quality item. It's comparable to random cheap robot toys that you would see alongside bootleg Spider-Man or TMNT figures at a swap meet. It's also an an enormous blister card, probaly 20 inches high, in spite of the toy being maybe 5 inches tall. So it might not be cheap to ship intact. PM me if you still want it.

This is in USA, but there seems to be Chinese (I think) writing on the box. It's at one of those little stores full of random stuff, from really random suppliers. It could be relatively recent, or it could be a little older. At a shop like this, it's conceivable that something could sit on the shelf for years and years. They also had a very 90s looking Monty Python and the Holy Grail shirt that I think I remember seeing at Suncoast like 10-15 years ago. The place reminds me of a similar shop I was in a year or two ago, where they still had posters of Joey Lawrence.

There's a much nicer Wataru figure in the Bandai Robot Spirits line, and it even comes with a little "Keith Courage" guy along with the robot: . No doubt this one will be going for $5000 soon when the Ebay community realizes its connection to the Turbo/PCE.

Most overpaying TG-16 collectors don't give two shits about what came out in Japan. I'm not sure if they even realize where the stuff came from originally.

I have been seeing alot Japanese figures of various characters being made real cheap design. I mean they look nice but the paint job is bleh. That simple look. My rule is that if it is not big as a fifteen inch monitor ignore it.
It has to be something fancy, otherwise I could make one myself.

Forget about the Wataru figures! Please pick up a dozen Joey Lawrence posters for Cook.
