I think the dilemma I'm facing is this: can we create a collection that is consistently tagged (accurate info), "high quality" sound, with high quality album art?

What should our standards be?

These days, with amazing screen resolutions, I think 1200x1200 pixel cover art is a minimum... I know .mp3's are far from ideal, but they just are so damn versatile (I like streaming a song through my browser when, ha!, browsing music...I want to be able to link to specific songs when chatting to folks, etc.)

Also, I need to throw an .hes archive up on the page, too (again, I'd want excellent cover art and meta data for .hes files).

As always, far too much work (even if it is crowdsourced here at pcefx, which is the only way it will happen in a timely fashion) but I'm going to build this anyway, even if I'm the only one who uses it.

BASICALLY, my PLAN:
(1) In order to be "complete", any and all files will be included (regardless of quality)
(2) Folks will help improve quality of all the files, slowly the crap is weeded out and only the best available
(3) Consistent, standard quality achieved

I think MP3 files are perfectly fine quality. Most listeners can't tell the different between 128kbps encoded MP3 files and CD-quality audio. If there's some question, go for 256kbit encoded MP3 files. That's what all the music stores on-line do. While we are not the general public, it's pretty clear that the general public has declared that "good enough" is, well, good enough, especially if it is very convenient. If people are chanting for higher quality, we could, as a community, encode a few key tracks in FLAC as well.

You should see if you can get your hands on permission to host the latest revision of NEZplug++ and Mednafen as well, so that we can play the HES files.

Sounds good to me. We should draft some preferred encoding settings (latest LAME with this bitrate and these flags, recorded from real hardware/ripped straight from the CD) and some acceptable encoding settings (LAME, no special flags, this bitrate, from Mednafen or NEZplug++/ripped straight from the CD). As long as people specify their methods for submitted files it will be easy to replace lower-quality files as newer, better ones come along.

I have a load of PCE sound rips in .pce ROM format and not HES as well.

Another question is how to tackle audio from CD - pure music only, complete CD audio or selected music/voice tracks (such as the beginning of Ys)?

Well all of the HuCard soundtracks I created using a plugin for winamp that would convert .hes to mp3.  I think they are all 128kbps cbr mp3 files (I know, not ideal, but they sound pretty good).  I then used a batch tagging utility to add what I could, Game Name, Developer, Year Released and song titles (when possible).  Also, most of them I ran through SoundBooth and normalized the levels so I don't have to turn them up in the car. :) So they should all be pretty consistent.

The CD soundtracks, however, are a mixed bag.  Some I've ripped using Exact Audio Copy and some I got from other forum members or elsewhere.  So sound quality, file naming conventions, and tags are not consistent.

Also, thanks to MotherGunner, I've added another soundtrack to the list: "Devil Crash Alien Crush"

It's arranged music from those 2 games.  Sounds awesome!

As an aside, looking at the .nfo file included it looks like it was ripped by a "blindell" back in 2010...  Hmmmmm, I wonder who that could be. ;)

That's what I did with Dungeon Explorer II, I might've done that with Ys 4.  I know I did include Perfect Collection editions & some mashup's of my own with Ys 4.  In any case, yeah, it's hard to know how extensive the soundtracks should be.

OK, thanks for all the info, folks. It looks like we are going to find a way to make this work :)

(1) It doesn't hurt to include tracks from cinema scenes... if folks don't like them, they can delete them.
(2) 256kbs (constant) seems good.
(3) TEDIOUS is the best way to describe everything I want....

This probably won't help, but I have a set of edited-together complete Hucard soundtracks that I use in the music videos on my site. They are all in 1 file each, not individual tracks.

I find it kind of funny that I put a solid weekend of work into building a website to host these soundtracks and it's been sitting lifeless for nearly a year, when all I really had to do was link the soundtracks in a thread for people to enjoy. Derp. :)

I know!  My kid loves listening to old video game music in the car (as do I)!  Don't bother bookmarking the site.  It's now on hiatus.  But all of the soundtracks are linked in the original post of this thread now. :)
